Both me and FI are pretty young, and we haven’t lived together yet. But we bought a house on Sunday.
Technically we haven’t bought it yettt, because we are building, so the offer with the builder is going through (we asked for some more upgrades). We also have this week to back out. But by the end of this week, we are commited.
The community just got released, they haven’t had any grand openings yet, so they prices were very low, and they throw in 5 appliances and $5,000 in free upgrades. Which is amazing. The houses are way nicer and better finishes than other developments in the area, plus they are $40,000 cheaper than others in comparison.
So basically we got a STEAL. We did a little bit of shopping around, looking at models and looking at the market, then when we walked into this one and showed us the plans/models with the upgrades and what not I was very quickly sold. However, it took FI a while to process it.
The only problem is… the anticipated move in date is October 3rd, 2012. aka 18 months away. It is very far away, plus they might even be delayed who knows. (so i might not move in until 2 years )
ANYWAYS.. yah thought I would share. Who else builds? happy overall?

Congrats! If DH and I could build we would have, and will likely consider it down the road.
Did you do any digging into the builder’s background/referrals? My parents built their first home a couple years ago. They have absolutely no regrets, but one thing they were glad to have done was research their builder in a big way. They almost went with a different one and luckily were able to find out he was having financial problems which could have created a few big problems as one of his recent developments had leins on it or something.
I think a custom home with upgrades etc. done the way you want them is definitely worth the wait! Fingers crossed you can get in without delays.

Building can be tough. So many things can change within that time frame. Is there a way that you can put a clause in the contract to revisit finishes as they put them in? your tastes and styles could change in that time period.

Well our wedding is next june, so then we got at least 3 months after that (hoping he is not delayed)
I’m just scared that he isn’t late because neither me or FI are renting/have our own place right now, so we would have to find a place to rent for 3 months which is silly and can be hard.
Other than that, we have nooothing together, so now that I have a house, and know what the floor plans and measurements are, I am already doing my interior planning (I am huge on interior design, almost chose is as a career) and FI just shakes his head.
