I see nothing wrong with asking him to return it and wait. Your being financially cautious and looking out for both of your best interests. I would rather wait longer and get what I want. I would just tell him you love how sweet and thoughtful he was but it will be hard for you to enjoy it without feeling guilty about the cost.

I would just be wary to lead with “it’s not the one I wanted” and focus more on “I love what I have for now and we can’t afford this, let’s return it and stick to our down the road upgrade plan”.

im sure you don’t want him to feel like his offering doesn’t mean anything because it’s not a 28k ring!

I’d bring it up but definitely with the pretense that also want to be financially responsible.  That you love the thought but rather wait until you guys are in a better position to make an upgrade. Good luck!

Did he trade in your old ring or buy a whole new one? If he bought a new one that means by the time you get the Tiffany you will have 3 rings (lucky:)

Maybe you can talk him into returning the ring and buying a less expensive eternity band to add some bling?

How did he upgrade the ring without involving you?  Did he just buy a new ring out of nowhere?  I would be upset if my fiancé did that.

cls9q:  I could be mistaken but didn’t you just upgrade your ring? What’s with the judgement?

That’s a really pretty ring though.  I don’t see anything wrong with wanting to hold off for financial reasons.  But just like someone above me said,  I wouldn’t even say that it’s not the one you want.

FutureDrAtkins:  I think that’s her point.  That she was lectured about her upgrade that was free yet now the OP wants a more expensive upgrade than the one her FI gave her.  No judgement from me but I see Cls9q’s point.

NovaRising:  But OP said that she didn’t ask for this upgrade and the Tiffany ring is something that would be years and years down the line. Everyone’s allowed to dream. I guess I don’t know what was said back and forth between the two, nor do I really care. I just don’t understand why people can’t play nice I guess…

FutureDrAtkins:  I hear what you’re saying.  I just read the original back and forth.
