    Hello, filipino brides!

I just want to start a new thread for filipino brides.  I realized that the latest thread was started a year ago.

So to all of you pinay brides out there, post your questions, concerns and plans here.  And to the non-filipinos with filipino grooms, you are most welcome! ;)

Me Me Me! I'm a Pinay bride ;). Right now the bane of my existence is the guest list. Everything else about planning my wedding has been honky dory.

isn't the guestlist crazy??? it definitely is the bane of our existence.  we started out with 70 (then my FI's family gave me their list with 69 guests!!!!!), it became 100, then 120.  now, we are looking at 140. ugh!!!

wait till u have the rsvp problems! hahaha

Your dad wants to roast the pig himself? In the parking lot?! Man, he must love his lechon hahaha

We are having a lechon as FI and I are filipinos and we don't see much of a problem with it and our guests.  But we are paying a hefty corkage fee (same price as the lechon, actually)!

Haha, I just introduced myself on that "year-old" post. Anyways, I hate looking at our guest list! We want it to keep it medium-sized at about 150, and I keep seeing the list growing and growing...

250!!! in my mind I see 250 (because my mom knows the venue can hold up to 250 seated with dancing). I wanted 150. Now and again a relative will say they cannot attend, and then my mom goes to her B list to make sure the number adds up to 250.  NO B List!!!!! NO B List!!!! ;(

Will keep you posted on RSVP problems...I can't wait. Argh.

    PS, I love hazel920's lechon dad...too cute!

hahahaaa!!  i LOOOOVE the lechon idea!  i would have that except for the small chunk of my extended flipino fam who are Seventh Day Adventists and dont eat pork!  imagine my 96 year old great grandpa seeing a whole roasted pig as he walks into my reception!  i swear though if he could, my dad would totally be cooking that lechon right there with your dad and talking about the old military days hazel!!

im glad i stumbled across this filipina brides board.  im Marj, i live in jacksonville, fl.  my fiance (filipino too) is in the navy but is deployed right now till june.  we both come from military families which mean our guests will literally be flying in from all over the the world so we figured the easiest thing for everyone is to hold our wedding in orlando.  we're currently at the very start of the planning process.   where is everyone from and where are you holding yours?

    Hi Filipino Bees,

I've been lurking here as well for a while now, and wanted to find out if any of you are planning your weddings in the Philippines.  The reason is that I am, but am also planning a small Las Vegas one.

Just wanted to touch base and find out what everyone's experiences has been!  I live in Long Beach, CA but was born in Cebu, Philippines.

Hope to hear more stories from you guys!

@ panchosmom: no way!!! i went to college in cebu!  small world :) My wedding's gonna be here in LA (San Fernando Valley) but I helped my sister plan her wedding in the Philippines in 2006.  I told my mom I'm never getting married in the Philippines because I was so traumatized by her relatives' drama. LOL!

@jenn:  and that guest list is gonna keep growing!

@mmauricio:  love the pic! my FI is filipino too and we are planning our wedding here in Los Angeles.  We have a handful of guests that are flying from the abroad too :)

@msqthoney:  that's a really nice photo!  OMG!  where in Cebu did you go to school?  I went to USC-main graduated in '92.  That was a long time ago.... I wanted to do my wedding here, but since all my family is in Cebu, have to do it there.  I know what you mean by drama.  Right now, there's already a bit of it coming out.  Hopefully, I can convince everyone to calm down when I go to visit this May.  I'm more excited about my Vegas wedding than the Cebu one! :-)  Good Luck on your wedding too!

@panchosmom:  I went to Velez, class 2003.  Weeeeeeeeee!!! When are you getting married (both in Cebu and Vegas)?  And where in Cebu?  OMG!!! So excited for u too.

LOL, drama's gonna surface in some way.  A lot of my mom's siblings were hurt that they were not chosen as sponsors nor their kids for the wedding party.   And my mom had a crying fit/breakdown the night before the wedding because my sister didn't stay too long for her despedida de soltera (a sort of farewell party in honor of the bride).  She threatened not to come to the wedding the next day.  UGH!  Never again! hahaha

How about other pinay brides out there?  Any drama from the family yet? LOL

Thanks!! Well, we are going to have sponsors, barongs, the cord, the pinning of the veil, the unity candle - and then at the reception, the money dance! My fiance is trying to find out anymore he doesnt know about - so we might have more too! Anything else fun I might have left out?

I'm half Filipino -- but I spent half of my life in the Philippines, so I actually feel much more culturally Filipino than white (my Dad's Irish American).  My fiance and I live and work in Miami, but we are planning to get married in the Philippines.  I consider it my home and I don't think the day would be the same if my Filipino side of my family wasn't there.  My fiance is white, but he has been so supportive of the idea.  He's embracing it all: barong, lechon -- everything! :-)

@msqthoney:  the las vegas one will be this year on 8/21, and the cebu one will be next year, but no set date yet.  we're going home in May to figure it out with the Taoist Temple. :-)  I'm 3/4 Chinese-Filipino and my FI is Caucasian.

@irishcolleen143:  welcome to the board!  I'm so happy to finally meet someone who's also getting married in the P.I.!   I agree, the wedding wouldn't be complete without my family from over there.  when is your wedding?

@leighannd: I think you got everythig covered.  Are you gonna have the coins (arras) as well?  I actually love this custom.  It signifies your husband's promise to always provide for you and your future family, and you, in turn, entrusting what you have to him.  And oh, we were just talking about it, lechon (roasted pig!).  LOL!

@panchosmom:  Ohhh, the Toaist Temple is pretty spectacular.  I didn't know you could do weddings there.   And the view would be awesome too!  I'm so jealous that you get to plan two weddings! hahaha

@irishcolleen:  welcome to the pinay board! :)

i havent come across fam drama yet and hope i dont!!  however it does seem like my mom wants to assign everyone in the family a role in the wedding including having FOUR of my nephews be ring bearers!  (really mom?  do i have that many rings to carry down the aisle?!)

    haha ...

@leighannd - im looking forward to the money dance too!!

the american version calls for two lines.  men line up in one line to dance with the bride - the MOH collects money at the head of the line.  in the other, women line up to dance with the groom and the best man collects the money.  at filipino weddings, those who want to dance will pin it to the couple and thats how ive always known it.  The last wedding i went to, the DJ had not done a filipino wedding before (bt was familiary with US money dance traditions) so when the money dance was taking long (due to the pinning of the money) he stopped the music and (rudely) announced:  "Um, excuse me, i didnt say anything about pinning money onto the bride and groom.  we're gonna just collect it because this is taking too long."  one of the groomsmen spoke up and said "just play the music man" and the dj CAME BACK at him (on the mic) "Oh, you don't want to mess with the DJ, my friend".  so frikin rude!!!!  everyone kept carrying on the filipino way anyways ...

OMG!!  I WOULD HAVE FLIPPED IF THAT WAS SAID AT MY WEDDING!

@panchosmom: Its SO cool you are getting married in the Phils!  I have lots of friends from Cebu -- are you getting married there? Our date is August 7th and we will have it in Tagatay.  We are getting married in Calreuega Chapel and the reception will be in Taal Vista Hotel.

@irishcolleen143:  yes, i'm getting married in Cebu, but still no date.  how many times have you flown back to the PI to arrange the details?  How early will you be going before your wedding date?

@msqthoney:  no, we're not getting married at the temple, but we're waiting to visit it so they can tell us the right date to get married. Smile  very superstitious family....

I've flown there only once recently and I don't plan on flying back until 2 weeks before the wedding.  Luckily, my Mom lives there, so she has been really doing the bulk of the work! We've essentially worked out an email system where I email my Mom and the wedding planner with particular ideas/images for the flowers, the flowergirl dresses, the menu, etc and they just find comparable/identical products back home.  Its been working out really well so far.  I trust my Mom with all the smaller details and I'm glad we have a great relationship, otherwise I'd NEVER be able to pull this off.

Oh, and if you are still looking for advice on wedding dresses, you should check this one Filipina wedding dress designer, Veluz Reyes.  This is her blog: http://veluzreyes.blogspot.com

If I had the ability to fly back to the Philippines for all the fittings, I'd TOTALLY get a dress from her.  Her dresses are AMAZING -- elegant, intricate, and timeless.

@msqthoney:  yes, they do that over there.  thank you!

FI and I grew up in the same city in the Philippines (Bacolod City).  We decided that our wedding favors would be different kinds of sweets unique to our city :) FMIL are bringing them with her on March when she comes for the big day.  I had my BM's dresses made by a Bacolod designer as well.  And FI's barong will be here next week! whew! :)

But I bought my wedding dress here.

Yes, they have a short life span.  And they get bruised really easily.  You need some extra TLC when transporting them :)  Either way, I'm sure they'd look awesome!

    Hi girls!

I just wanted to share my photographer, Nelwin Uy.  You check out his website: www.nelwinuy.com.  I scoured the Philippine wedding photographer websites and his pictures were my favorite -- by far!  I've booked him for my Tagaytay wedding on August 7, 2010. I'm so excited!

I figured I'd share his info because although he is based in the Philippines, he does international bookings as well.  If my photos turn out to be as good as the ones on his website, it'll be worth every freaking cent!

my FH is filipino and i'm viet--do i still qualify for this post? (=

do you guys suggesting going to the phillipines to get my BM dresses made and buy accessories? i have no clue what the dollar-to-pesos ratio is and how much the average dress costs over there, but back when i was in high school my friend's debut dresses were purchased from the philipines and they were awesome! anyone purchase your wedding things overseas? good or bad?

and btw @pynkbunnie that's an awesome centerpiece--i'm totally jealous!!

muffins:  Hi!  My bm's dresses are from the Philippines.  I wouldn't really say that I would recommend it because it's just hard that you are not there, personally, to supervise everything.  Maybe I am just a little too picky or a little of a control freak! LOL... I wanted my BM's to wear chartreuse dresses and it's quite a challenge to find dresses that I like in that color here in the US.  I decided to have them made in the Philippines.   I guess if there's somebody in the Philippines that you can delegate with all the dress issues, it would be great.

The peso-dollar exchange rate is about 47 pesos per dollar right now.  My dresses came up to around $175 each.  But I'm sure there would be cheaper ones or more expensive ones, whatever fits your budget.

My MOG and MOB dresses were also made over there.  Had a bit of a problem with their dresses because the dresses came out to be a different color than what I wanted.

And I could make a suggestion, you can also buy your cloth here and have it made over there.  That's what my mom did for my sister's wedding years ago.

    Good luck!  :)

    kwago    April 1, 2011   Dallas

Hi everyone! Wow, I’m glad I found this board! We just got engaged two weeks ago. My FH is of Mexican heritage although he was born and raised here in the US. I grew up in the Philippines but moved to Texas when I was 14. Although I still think of Philippines as home, I haven’t been there in a loooong time. We are having the wedding in Dallas since that is where all our friends and immediate families are.

We aren’t planning on doing a lot of traditional things, we really just want to be relaxed and have fun on our special day. We were both raised Catholics but neither of us go to church anymore so we are undecided on having a Catholic wedding. His parents don’t mind either way but mine would prefer us to. They’re not pressuring us but my mom is already talking about ordering the arras, cord, and veil!

Are any Filipina brides in the same situation? Another alternative I offered to my mom was to just have a Catholic blessing in a church after the wedding itself, where we can invite only close family.

I’m also considering having lechon at the reception, if the venue allows it. :) It will probably make some of my vegetarian friends unhappy but it’s something I’m seriously considering. Only a handful of my friends are vegetarian but the rest of them will probably love seeing that (even the non-Filipino friends). What do you guys think?

Hi Kwago! :) Welcome! I agree with hazel, it's your wedding and you can do whatever you want.  But dealing with parents can be tricky sometimes so you just have to find a common ground and compromise on some things :)  Good luck and I hope things turn out well for you.

@Hazel:  I still crack up everytime I read your PP about the lechon! LOL!  I'm glad that you found a way to incorporate lechon into your wedding festivities (or pre-wedding festivities is more like it!).  Lechon with apple!  hahaha Talk about traditional!  Maybe I should have an apple for my lechon as well.  hmmm...
