After 9 years of waiting (worth every minute of it.. he’s amazing!) he finally popped the question. At this point, I always had a lingering suspicion that it would happen soon but was still completely surprised!
On the day after the 4th, he had to work half the day but suggested we go out on his boat and have a picnic when he was off. After we finished eating, we were talking a little (nothing of significance, and definitely no wedding talk at all which we had been doing more recently because I’ve been on a 3 week break before going to grad school and was able to bring up things I read on this site). While I was laying down with my face shielded from the sun, he just said, “So I have a question for you.” I said, “Yes?” and he got down on one knee and said, “Will you marry me?”
There was no build-up or anything.. just out of the blue and it was perfect! I was in a bit of shock that he had actually done it because he was always the one to joke and say we were never getting married. He was able to go see my uncle (where he bought the diamond) multiple times and even was able to ask my father for his permission.. all while still working and keeping me from suspecting something.
Well, here’s the stone. I say stone because he knew I was very specific on what I wanted so my uncle put it in a temporary Tiffany-style setting and the new one will be coming in a few weeks (being custom-made by my aunt and uncle). I probably should have taken a picture of with it out on the water but I was too excited! (sorry if the picture is huge. This is the first time I’ve posted a picture before!)
