- Wedding: November 2012
I’ve been feeling so crappy, health-wise, for months now. It’s been a stressful time with getting engaged and planning the wedding, my grandpa passed away, my fiance started back to school and I don’t see him so much… I chalked the yucky feelings up to all this. I’ve been getting horrible headaches, cramps (my cycle is a mess), nausea, the works.
After one particularly bad headache, I asked a nurse friend at work to check my blood pressure. It was 150/120. What the hell?! She checked it again, different machine. Same. I got my pressure checked twice a day for a few days and my diastolic was never below 115! I was basically shoved out of my office and off to the doctor.
Stop #1: My GP.
Even my doctor freaked out. I’m 5’4″ and 135lbs, there is no way I should have blood pressure running steadily that high. It’s DANGEROUS. He put me on super-pills and ordered blood and urine tests, both of which showed elevated white cell counts but no other problems. Cholesterol, sodium, blood count, urea, liver function, all fine. Now he’s got me lined up for a renal artery scan for next week because impaired blood flow to the kidneys can raise blood pressure. Still no explanation.
Stop #2: The Emergency Room
Thursday, 2 days after I got started on the blood pressure super-pills, I got another godawful headache. It didn’t respond to ANY pain medicine – not even Vicodin made a dent in it. I was literally pulling my own hair and punching pillows, I couldn’t stand it. Went to the emeregency room that night, was put on oxygen and given a shot of Toradol. My pressure was 135/111. The doctor said I was having a cluster headache and sent me home with more pain medicine. The Toradol helped but I was still feeling shitty the next day when…
Stop #3: The OB/GYN
I said my cycle has been all out of whack, so with the BP so high and as yet unexplained, I thought I’d have the lady-parts doc take a look. Due to the nature of my particular symptoms, they decided to do a Saline Infusion Sonogram to check all the girly bits that needed checking. First of all, motherfreakinghell does that ever hurt. This is NOT a sonogram like when they look at your precious baby and smile benevolently at a monitor! Google “SIS ultrasound.” I can’t even describe it.
Turns out I that while I don’t have any BAD news, I do have a weird-shaped uterus and my endometrial lining has some sort of infection that is causing it to CONSTANTLY shed, so that explains my cycle issues. I was ordered off birth control immediately because of my blood pressure, which made me more than a little nervous because conception right now would be a Very Bad Thing.
“Don’t you dare try any of that Natural Family Planning crap,” the NP said sternly. “You don’t know anything about your cycle right now, your lining is too thin for a healthy pregnancy, and you’re getting married in 8 months. Barrier method or not at all.”
Right-o. I appreciate her honesty.
She gave me a super-pill for the uterine infection and a script for the FREE prescription prenatal vitamins our supermarket pharmacy has. FREE! Supposed to help build my stuff back up and should make my hair pretty too.
Wow, this is a long post. All I really wanted to say is that I’m excited to finally, FINALLY be feeling better today.
Hope you guys are all having a good weekend too!
