Well, after seven long months of TTC (and a lot of frustration) the Sand Dollars are officially pregnant! I'm 4 weeks, 6 days today, and have an estimated due date of August 17. I planned on waiting a bit longer before telling people, but Jacob was just so excited that he told pretty much the whole social world he revolves in the second I called him to let him know that the doc said I'm really pregnant.
I'm still really nervous that something could go wrong, and of course we watched Marley and Me last night where the Jen Aniston character suffers a miscarriage before her first ultrasound, and I totally bawled my eyes out.
Since I found out on the weekend, I decided to just show up at my dr's office when they opened Monday morning hoping they could squeeze me in. They did, but my appointment was very brief. A pee test, a pelvic exam, then she handed me a packed of information and prenatals and told me my due date. I have to go buy a book stat because my nurse friend let me know that I can't take pepto or ibuprofin, thank goodness. I didn't even know! So if you have a favorite book, I need a good recommendation.
So exciting!
Also, do any of you other baby mamas experience cramping early on? I'm having very low-level mild cramps about 30% of my day. Is this just the uterus starting to expand?
Awwww, that's wonderful, congratulations! I'm sure you'll take good care of yourself and your little peanut!
Congrats! I didn't have cramping (other than some GI stuff) at all. Some people do have some implantation stuff and some expansion cramping, though.
My favorite book so far has been "Pregnancy Day By Day." I like it because there's a page to read each day, fun pictures, and practical advice. The book I enjoyed reading that covers a lot of ground and had a fun tone was "The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy." There are definitely more scientific ones out there...
congratulations!!! i know we're baby twins ;) so i thought i'd now share on your post - i've been having cramping on and off pretty consistently since my af was due...probably about 20-30% of the day as well. they've been mild, and no spotting, but definitely noticeable at times. i've read that it's likely your uterus expanding so i'm not too worried. i won't mind when it eases up though :)
Congratulations!
I had a really good book during pregnancy, it went through all the pre-ttc stuff, conception, 1st, 2nd & 3rd trimesters and neo-natal care (what to eat, what not to eat, exercises to do that can help with labour, how to identify signs of "baby blues" or post partum, ideas for what to put in your hospital bag, how to identify jaundice, as well as a really unbias look at BFing and formula feeding, basically everything under the sun) but it was a book from B.C. Health Ministry, so I am not sure about its availability.
Yay, congrats!!! And yes, I did experience some mild cramping like you, so I wouldn't be too worried. :)
Congrats @sand dollar! I too just found out that I was pregnant and am due the same week in August as you!! We haven't told anyone yet...We're gonna tell my family this weekend because we'll be celebrating X-mas with them so we'll be able to tell them in person. We'll do the same thing with his family on X-mas day. I want to wait to tell anyone else until after our first ultrasound when we hear a heart beat. We were not trying at all so this was kind of a surprise. I definitely was not behaving as if I was pregnant (just had my 30th b-day so there has been some celebration)! So that all makes me really nervous...You'll have to share what you learn and vice versa!! Congrats again!
Congratulations!
I totally had cramps, starting really early on- OB said not to worry about it unless they were severe and/or accompanied by bleeding.
For pregnancy books, I felt like I kind of knew a lot already about the do's and don't's, so I didn't read anything right away or buy anything... later on, I just went to the library catalogue and put on hold a few different books on pregnancy and childbirth so I could flip through each and pick out the parts I wanted to read. It's a nice way to check out different styles before investing in books, if you have a good local library.
awwww congrats!!! that's wonderful news and a wonderful time of year to be sooo happy!!
Congrats! I had cramping everyday and the nurse said it's completely normal. She said that it'll feel like you're getting your period but it'll never actually come. As long as there's no bleeding with the cramps then no worries.
Congrats!!!! From what I've heard, cramping early on is pretty normal. :)
Yeaah!!! Congratulations!
I had cramping early on as well (like period cramping) so don't stress unless you have bleeding along with it. I have the What to Expect book and You're Pregnancy Week by Week. I like the week by week book because it's very straight forward as to what's happening with you and the baby without a lot of extra "advice" thrown in - definitely more medical. The What to Expect book is okay but it goes by month rather than week which I don't like as much.
Both have WAAAYY to much info for me personally (I guess since they cover every condition and issue that you could have) so I just read the important parts and skim the rest.
Your appointment was pretty basic but usually they like to wait till 8 weeks so they can see the heartbeat, until then all they really can do is another pee test. But the waiting till that appt seems sooo long.
Congratulations Sand Dollar! DH and I just found out we are expecting a baby due the same week in August. We still haven't told anyone except my mom, and she and DH both keep nagging me to start telling more people, especially our family. I am just not sure that I'm ready! It was an unplanned pregnancy, and I am super nervous that something might go wrong, and then we would have to go back to all the people we told and tell them the bad news. I have tentatively decided to wait until after our first Dr. appt to tell anyone else (Jan 10). It feels like such a long time to wait!
Again, congrats, SD! Good luck with everything!!!
@sarahcisme: I'm in the same boat, and we also have the same day for the prenatal! I'm hoping that we get a sonogram during that one to hear the heartbeat. My plan was to just tell family until around 10-14 weeks, but my husband got a little carried away in his excitement. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things keep going well. I just hit week 5 today, so I'm about 1/3 of the way to the "safe zone"
Congrats Sanddollar! I'm so happy for you!
As for books, I've been "banned" from reading them as my hubby thinks I convience myself that I should feel a certain way and then I did. Goober man. BTW, if you start getting really sick, play around with when you take prenantals and which ones you take. That really helped me. And it's never too early to start reading about which birthing method you like.
@sand dollar: Yayyyyy! Congrats!
And, yes, I had cramping at about the point you are at in your pregnancy. I had implantation bleeding and actually didn't know I was pregnant until I missed my second period - which I had cramping leading into, and thought I was PMSing. So, totally normal!!
