Make a guest list.  Can they all fit in your fiance’s parents’ backyard?  Do you need to rent chairs?  Tables?  A tent?  Look at all those costs firsts.

Then decide what you’ll do about food and drinks.

Figure out the bathroom needs. Will you be able to use all the bathrooms in the house. Need to rent portable units.

Factor in cost of sprucing up the backyard, if need be, and the cost of hiring housekeeping services befpre and after the event.

If you don’t have a guest list, I would start with that.  After that, it is hiring/renting the people you will need to hire/rent from.  After the officent (most important to the actually getting married thing) I would start with tables, chairs, tent (if you are having one) and caterer.  Sometimes caterers can provide the tent/table/chairs ect.  These would be my tops as they are pretty non-negociable “Have to have them” items.

Next would be photographers and DJs.  They book up, and May (espeically late May) is prime wedding season.

@Dreambee:  We have the same wedding date! Don’t worry – I haven’t done anything either (besides draft a guest list), but we’re going to look at venues this weekend. We have plenty of time, but I feel you – it’s overwhelming just figuring out where to begin. Good luck!

@Dreambee:  Think about logistics for the bathrooms.  Do his parents want each bathroom used?  Is each bathroom accessible from outside?

And…what is your contigency plan in case it rains?

Guest parking. Will you need to inform neighbors the street parking will be tight that evening or maybe hire a valet to park the cars elsewhere.
