Here's the MA JP website that answers some of your questions. It looks like you apply for your marraige license in your town but you can get any MA JP to perform your ceremony. http://www.mjpa.org/
I have read some great reviews on Tom Welch, he is listed on that site also. We will be using a JP if our friend who is a minister can't make it to our wedding.
I'm also an Eastern MA bride, so I hope I can help. I posted on a local board to get some recommendations, with the thought that local brides would have the best feedback on JPs, rather than random listings of people. We are using Rick Perry, who is out of Gloucester. He has been great to deal with thus far; he's all about customizing the ceremony for you and your fiancee. I've also heard good things about Tom Welch. FYI, pricing guidelines for JPs are set by the state. Good luck!
We have ours booked already, and we're getting married on 10/10/10. We've discovered that our date is ridiculously popular, so things are booking up really quickly. I contacted a couple of people, but got the best feel from Rick Perry. We met with him, asked him some questions, and he presented his info to us. It was pretty casual, but very informative. I would probably do it sooner rather than later, just to get it done. This was the easiest thing that we have booked so far! Good luck!
I am using a JOP and I'm getting married in September of 2010. We are using Barbara Kahn. She is out of Malden and she is just wonderful. I've seen her do a handful of other weddings I've been to and she makes such a wonderful ceremony. She makes it very personal and sweet and really follows the lead of what the bride and groom want. He daughter is Heather Kahn from the channel 5 news!

Anyone know how to go about this search? Do we interview them? Do we get one in the town we live in, or the town we are getting married in? Please help! I am so lost.
