I would look at wedding photographers. Or the very least a wedding and portrait photographer. I doubt I’d go with just a portrait photogarpher becuase they typicaly work with mostly families and kids, and it’s just a different realm in terms of posing and interaction.

@tigergrrl2008:  That is not normal as far as I’m concerned.  This is so crazy–and what are the chances?!–but I have an absolutely amazing photographer to recommend to you out of Lafayette!  It’s a husband/wife team, but for engagements, you’d get the husband, and they travel to Baton Rouge.  Seriously I’m obsessed with their work.

Not normal. I actually ended up buying a groupon for a photo session with DH. I just wanted some Winter Pictures with Snow to show his family. Every photography company I looked at was available, especially since we didn’t have a time constraint, a lot of them will even do “mini-sessions” which is a cheaper option.

Are you contacting super high end photographers? The higher end the photographer the more choosy they are usually able to be with their clients. I dont love shooting engagements so in the not too distant future I will only offer them to my wedding clients. The more in demand you are the more you can do what you want and select the gigs you want to shoot. Also right now is the busiest time of year for weddings so some people just dont want to make themselves available for less than a certain amount.

Weird, I would just treat it as an engagement session – and charge it accordingly.

There are definitely some photographers who only take on sessions for couples that are their wedding clients. I know several that do that. For many of them it has to do with being busy and really wanting to focus their attention on their wedding clients – and not stretching themsevles too thin.

Some are busy enough where they Can turn down jobs. This is part of being self employed… you can only work so much and you can pick and choose what work you want to do. Not everyone wants to hire employes to keep up with jobs either so you can physically and mentally only do so many jobs without sacrificing service/quality.

Id just Google portrait photographers. Id do couple sessions outside of wedding clients but Im not is such high demand yet so I can. Id just charge my family lifestyle rates. Just like if a marred or non engaged couple came to me wanting nice pictures. Ive done many. I started with portraits so I do both, some Only do wedding.
