Hi!
We're having a fingerprint tree guest book and we're psyched about it. I was wondering how it went over at other people's weddings. Did you do anything in particular that got more of a reponse from your guests? Did people say that they liked it or that they weren't into it?
Thanks!
I would love to know about this too!!
We're worried that guests won't want to ink their fingers up.
I have been to a couple weddings with this and I never participate because I hate having stuff on my hands and I'd feel silly walking around with a colored thumb/finger all night and into the next day. I haven't noticed at these weddings how many other people participated so I can't speak to that.
Can you use washable ink for these? I use the washable stuff all the time in my classroom, and clean up is a breeze!
@Kant: We're planning on having baby wipes or anti-bacterial wipes (along with a small trash can) right next to the guest book station to keep people from having ink on their hands all night.
Would that have changed your opinion of the guest book as a guest?
@Belle81: I'll have to look into it... what brand do you normally use?
Our fingerprint tree was super popular! We put wet wipes next to it with a little trash can, and almost everyone participated. We love it. It's hanging in our living room. I put out three different colors of green and let people choose. I'm pretty sure I used Color Box and since you aren't leaving the ink on your finger very long, it comes right off.

@Ms. Library: Wow, that looks great! What kind of wipes did you use? and how did you put them out? Just in the box?
@Ms. Library: I love that tree! Did you draw it yourself or get it from somewhere?
@shimmerofheaven: I don't remember the specific brand, but they were the kind you can find at Walmart in big boxes. I think we ended up going through one box. The first basket you can see is where I put the wipes. The second basket was our little trash basket. I dressed them up with some ribbon to make it look better.
@mannellal: I found a picture I liked on Google and had my sister paint it for us. She added our initials to the tree trunk too!
Mine was well received and signed by all guests although not all guests used their fingerprint even though we provided baby wipes. A few obviously didn't want to get it on their finger because a very small amount of prints are clearly the stamp pad. I think it adds to the painting though. Hubby and I love it. After we got back from the honeymoon we spent some time looking at it and all the sigs. And now it's displayed in our home. I still received compliments on it later from guests.
One recommendation I do have is to have your bridal party take part in it before the wedding. It gives people the idea of what to do! It worked out fabulously with our wedding, and no one was confused!
We also had a traditional guestbook because my mom was convinced that no one over 40 would want to do the tree, and NO ONE but my mom and our photographer signed the book! Everyone did the tree! The two signatures from my mom and the photographer were just repeats from the tree!
@shimmerofheaven: To be honest, probably not :P it seems like too much of a production to me just to sign a darn guestbook, not to mention that I still hate having "stuff" on my hands, including the wet/stickiness from baby wipes or whatnot. Don't let my opinion grind you down though, I'm just one person!
i love these too! we want to do one since we're having a tree/bird theme to our wedding. i hope lots of people will participate! where did people get theirs? i've seen lots of beautiful ones on etsy
We are also considering the tree guest book, but we were wondering if people would actually take the time out to sign it and/or if they would be bothered by the ink.
There are TONS of them on Etsy and I found this one that already has leaves on it. We might consider this too, but I personally like the idea of having everyone's fingerprint because it seems more personal to me.

@MrsE.ToBe :I made mine but they aren't that expensive on Etsy. It actually took quite awhile to paint. Buying would've been so much easier!
@MrsE.ToBe : I got mine at this shop on Etsy - http://www.etsy.com/people/YourKeepsakeCo?ref=ls_profile
@Kant: Regardless of you being one person, I appreciate your honesty! :)
@Ms. Library: That's an awesome idea! My family is not in the wedding loop, so I'm sure they would be confused if they saw it, even though my tree comes with a little instruction card to display. Also, (haha I can't believe I'm so hung up on wipes!) it looks like your wipes are individually wrapped. Is that true? lol
I wonder if we should supply little leaf stamps for them to use instead? Or would that defeat the purpose? I'm stuck because I know my friends are pretty savvy but I don't know about the older crowd!
@Talishazwi: We're looking forward to displaying it in our home too. I didn't want a book that would be put in a drawer and looked at once a year (that's what I would do, anyway!). I got mine for pretty cheap - but what talent you must have to be able to paint a realistic looking tree! I can't draw my way out of a paper bag!
I guess what I'm thinking is like this listing: http://www.etsy.com/listing/74742813/stamp-me-wedding-tree-guest-signature?ref=sr_list_15&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=wedding+tree+guest+book&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade
@shimmerofheaven: Yep, they were individually wrapped. We used the leftovers the next day during our pool party/cookout at my in-laws' house. They come in a white box with green writing on the box. I think at most they cost $5.
This is what I am going to do. I fell in love with the idea. Never thought of the wet wipes though, so thanks ladies.
We're doing one as well. It really goes with our theme. I've already planned to have wipes and a small trash can, also instructions in a small frame of directions for "leafing" their print and signatures.
But because we figured there would be guests who just wouldn't want to do it we also are using a slab of wood, cut from a tree in my parent's back yard. We're sanding it down, going to stencil our monogram in the middle and guests can also sigh on the log slice.
Also, I was told by the lady who painted my tree that I should try to use dye ink pads versus pigment ink pads. Something about drying and smearing is faster and less likely with dye ink.
This is our tree :o)

@Mrs.tobe: that is just GORGEOUS!! =)
I really want to do this but my mom keeps saying "some people may not be up togiving their fingerprints?!" I just laughed im like well it can be optional, and the paranoid dont need to participate! LOL What the heck am I going to do with it anyways!? haha!
I went to a wedding this past weekend that had one. There were regular wet-naps in a cute basket on another table beside the tree print, and everyone was into it, old and young guests alike. The DJ made an annoucement about it, and by the end of the night it looked beautiful.
I drew mine! I've seen tons on etsy but way too rich for my blood (since I can do it myself!)
Another route I have seen bees go is to get a super fantaastic artistic friend to make one for them (either as a wedding gift or just because :P)
never seen one done at a wedding before personally, so I hope that even though that means that most of the people attending won't have seen one either that the guests will be into it.
As PP's have mentioned/suggested we'll have babywipes or wet-naps next to the tree on the table & hopefully no one will be too shy of it!
@zsgirl:I actually got it on Etsy.. The seller's shop name is: DownRightCountry.
@CupCakeMeg:Thank you! That story about what your mom said is hilarious!
*sigh*
My dad came in and put his thumbprint at the bottom of the tree (without reading directions) before the ceremony.... and then a lot of people followed his lead because it said Dad and surely Dad knows best....

Of course I can't be mad at him...but it's so typical for him not to read directions lol.
@Mrs.Oat: Haha thanks! I joke and say you know how they say the acorns don't fall far from the tree, well it's the same as wedding leaves!
I just saw this on pinterest and thought it was cute so I wanted to share:

@als87: This is cute!!!!
I really am hoping to make my own tree before the end of june! I am looking for a few inspiration pics but havent found one Im in love with yet.
@als87: Love the tree idea, but this is SO cute! I've never seen anything like it before.
Personally I think the idea is cute but to be honest i wouldnt give my fingerprint at a wedding even if wipes were provided I would just feel like it was too much effort. I would sign my name though
@als87:That is adorable!
@als87:Awww, so funny! What can you say? That's a man for ya...lol
Here's our fingerprint tree! One of my best friends painted it for us and we used colorbox ink, it doesn't stain your fingers. We had two little buckets, one with hand wipes and one for trash. Most everyone participated, only one person used the ink pad to make their mark instead of their finger.

Our fingerprint tree framed, right out of the box! Sorry it's so giant. We had ours top mounted because some people signed right to the edge.
I was planning to a use little leaf stamp, but now I'm thinking maybe the fingerprints will be more personal. SO MANY DECISIONS! Agh.
@dmcanespy: you HAVE to do thumbprints!! =D We did this at our wedding, and my most favorite prints are people that had their kids do it (one even printed their sleeping baby!)- they're so tiny and adorable!! It adds so much character to the tree with the actual thumbprints.
For those of you worried about people not wanting ink on their fingers, don't be. If people REALLY don't want to do it, they won't, but I found my guests were wearing it like a bagde of honor, going around giving each other the green thumbs-up! =)
Also, my hubby found the BEST poem to put on a sign by the tree so people knew what to do:
"Leaf" your thumbprint on a branch, then sign your name below, so in the years to come we know who helped our marriage grow!
