Every time I read this I get goosebumps.  I have a lot of respect for her for doing this.  It’s such a big deal to cancel something as big as a tour.  She has had that dog for 14 years!  I can’t imagine putting one of my fur babies down after that long =(

I was literally weeping when I read this last night. I couldn’t hold it together at all. I think anyone who’s really loved or been loved by a pet can understand this, dog people especially. So saddd.

Fiona Apple’s music has seen me through a lot the last 15 years. She says it here like no one else can.

As an animal lover, I think it’s a beautiful thing that she’s putting her loved one before her career but at the same time, she should probably just put the dog down. When an animal reaches the point where Janet appears to be, I feel that it’s more humane to just let them drift off to sleep than allow them to suffer until the end.

@Puffthemagicdragon:  That’s actually a good point that I hadn’t thought of. Can’t you pay to have someone come to your home to do this, too? I know it’s not cheap but I feel like I’ve heard of it being done.

What an amazing heart and soul she has. That dog is lucky to have her.

If I was in that position, I’d probably cancel my tour too, so I could spend the last “good days” she had left, and let her go with dignity by putting her down when the time came. It’s no fun watching your pet suffer. After watching my cat struggle with FIP last spring, I’m totally convinced people should have the option to euthanize themselves if they see fit. Who is the government to regulate how you want to exit the world? It has to be done anyway, why not let it be on your own terms?

daybyday: Yes, she could definitely have a vet come to her home to do it. I’m sure it’s more expensive than doing it the traditional way but she’s a celebrity. I’m sure cost isn’t an issue.

Stuporduck: I completely agree. It’s sad that it’s legal to put animals out of their misery but people can’t receive the same luxuries.

I knew I shouldn’t have read this but I did it anyways. Now I’m doing the ugly cry.. blahh.  My furbaby was put to sleep after 15 years last month. It was tough and there is no other way to put it.  I really like the way the blog handled it as well. Some people make fun of pet owners affected by the loss of a pet because it’s ‘only an animal’. I’m glad to see that they handled it with respect!

This is so sweet! It made me cry! As a dog-mommy I would do the exact same thing for my baby. What a wonderful lady!
