If the couple plans to stay in their home for awhile, I LOVE the idea of a return address embosser. SO cool. I want one, badly, and think it would make a great gift in this situation- kind of a twist on the "paper" thing. They can be a little pricier though, so it may not be exactly the "small" extra you were thinking of.
Hm...another thing is you could get them notecards with their monogram. Kind of traditional, I suspect.
Good post! I'll be thinking!
I'd encourage looking at Uncommon Goods to see if there is anything that fits you as a couple. I got my husband the 12 Reasons Why I Love you book for our wedding day, which he loved, but the website has a wide variety of books, journals, and cards that would be great 1st Anniversary gifts or inspiration.
How about a book created (sort of like a wedding book on kodak or snapfish) showcasing the first year of married life? That would be wonderful. From the time the wedding was over until now? Fill it with pics from the honeymoon, first home, all kinds of firsts basically..
Since it's a paper anniversary, maybe a gift certificate to barnes n noble so he can buy his favorite books? Or a paper gift certificate to an outdoors store/sporting goods or to somewhere he loves to shop? Tell them you want a paper gift certificate rather than the card type!
What about tickets to something? The ticket is the paper. Perhaps a game, concert, or play.
I had a photographer take some cool pictures of the wine bar where we first met and where mr. bee proposed.
A friend of my husband's made us a scrapbook of our wedding as part of our gift. I built on that and gave him 2 pages to add to it of our first year together!
He was creative too...he got me the anniversary Willow Tree figurine. He said that wood is made of paper, so that's why he got that for me. Cute and small...we didn't want to go too overboard since we also went out to a fabulous dinner!
I (selfishly) wanted to bump this up because my first anniversary is coming up and I need help! The traditional gift, as some have mentioned, is paper. The contemporary gift is clocks. I know you are all soooo creative. Please help me come up with something better (and more romantic) than what I've got so far...a paper clock.
I can't afford to do boudoir pics right now so I'm kind of hoping to do them as an anniversary present at some point, is that something you have considered? I think its a cool idea to do them post-wedding because sure, it's easy to be hot as the wedding approaches, but it's even better to remind your husband that you're still just as hot as you were then, after the wedding is over!!
I'm definitely too shy to do boudoir pics and I wish now I hadn't made him a scrap book of our honeymoon for his birthday because that would have been great as an anniversary gift!
The big gift I'm going to get him is a GPS unit for his car. Since he's a big comic book fan, I might get him a comic book or two to cover the traditional paper gift.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far! I like the ticket idea, in fact I had already looked into that and unfortunately all the good shows are coming to town just before or the week of our anniversary. Makes it tricky to surprise him. Bummer!
I love these ideas. I didnt know the modern version was a clock. Darn my husband's fancy tastes! The watch he wants is far from cheap. Hmm... liking the book idea.
My sister-in-law said wooden things can count as "paper", so I thought a cute thing to get would be one of those signs that has your family name, and then says "established: 2009" or whatever year you were married. I also think prints or art is a fun idea, especially since a lot of the times in the first year of marriage you are settling into a home together.
My husband got me personalized fancy notecards and envelopes and took me back to our wedding night hotel. Perfection.
I heard about this cool website that recreates the sky (horizon, moon, stars, etc.) from the location you were married on the night you were married (or whatever other occasion you choose). It's Indigonight.com. It looks really neat and I totally wanted to get this for my husband for our first anniversary, but even at a reasonable $50 our budget is too tight right now :-( But I think it's a cool, traditional yet modern take on the paper gift!

Any ideas what to get as a first anniversary gift? Anyone sticking with the traditional paper gift? I've got one idea for an anniversary gift so far, but I'm hoping to get a small "something paper" any suggestions?
