I think it really depends on your personal preferance. I have been to several that vary as well, so I'd just do whatever you are comfortable doing.
I have stood just to see the couple dancing and get a great picture, but I have never attended a wedding where everyone was asked to stand. If you would prefer for everyone to stand, ask your emcee to announce it. Or, you can ask your bridal party to stand and maybe your guests will follow.

I have a question about the first dance. Are guests "supposed" to stand as the bride and groom dance the first dance? I've been to and seen weddings where guests stand, and others where people stay seated. I guess it depends on what the guests themselves choose to do, but does the emcee usually ask that guests stand?
