My fiance and I are a little shy and don't dance particularly well, either. He suggested finding a short song for our first dance, but nothing comes to mind at the moment. We both love pretty much all kinds of music but slow, sentimental but short ones are kind of hard to think of. Do any of you have suggestions?
"Calico Skies" by Paul McCartney is only 2 and half minutes long. Great song, and short!
If you like country at all, "I just want to dance with you" by George Straitt if fairly short and very sweet imho. Since "our song" isn't that easy to dance to I suggested it to my FI, but he still wants to stick with the song that means a lot to us...hopefully we'll find a good dance teacher to help us make it work.
"At Last" 3 minutes 2 second. Very sentimental, sweet, perfect, (for us anyway).
How about "I've just seen a face" from the movie "Across the Universe." It's a Beatles song, but it's only about 1:30 mins long :)
We danced to the Eels cover of Can't Help Falling in Love. It clocks in at 2:08!
In my life by the beatles is about 2 and a half .... a lot of beatles songs are short! :)
"More than Anyone" by Gavin DeGraw. It's just under 3 minutes. My fiance and I chose it because it is a beautiful song and it's short and sweet.
Happy ever after in your eyes by ben harper
its actually really sentimental because Heath Ledger asked ben harper to write this song for his daughter matilda when she was born, and he died shortly thereafter.
its pretty short too, but its so incredibly beautiful.
I'll be dancing (with my *gasp* husband) to Norah Jones "Come Away with Me". It's about 3 minutes but can be cut down as a lot of it is instrumental.
One other thing you can think about doing: Finding a song you like, and having your DJ invite your guests to join you on the dance floor after the first 30 seconds/minute/however long you think you can stand it. That's what our plan is.
@MissPinotGrigio: Ahhh! Thank you so much for reminding me of the fantastic David Grey. So many of his songs are great. "Now and Always" immediately comes to mind.
@underneathy: You might want to flip through an album of Norah Jones or The Beatles. They both have fantastic short, simple songs.
Sarah McLachlan- Ice Cream ;) from "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" album - 2min36
It's sweet & simple.

Just click play on the right top corner!
Hmm, my response disappeared.
You might want to check out Lemonhead's "Into Your Arms (Acoustic)", which you can listen to here:

Short and Sweet - 1:33, and the lyrics are
"I know a place, where I can go; Into your arms, ohhh into your arms; I can go"
Perfect for a dance! :)
Crazy Love by Van Morrison...Only about 2 and a half minutes...but happy and very sweet. I love it! I wanted it to be my first dance song, but my FI's friend used it recently and he doesn't want to steal the song =(
Can't help falling in love with you by Elvis is super short and really sweet!
Aw, you just got that Lemonheads song stuck in my head. I love it!
I will be dancing to Louis Armstrong's version of "La Vie en Rose." It brings tears to my eys every time I hear it.
We'll be dancing to Phil Collins, Groovy Kind of Love :) It's a little over 3 mins but plan to have the bridal party join so it's not all eyes on us...
Lyrics:
When I'm feeling blue
All I have to do
Is take a look at you
Then I'm not so blue
When you're close to me
I can feel you heart beat
I can hear you breathing
In my ear
Wouldn't you agree?
Baby, you and me got a groovy kind of love
Any time you want to
You can turn me on to
Anything you want to
Any time at all
When I kiss your lips
Ooh, I start to shiver
Can't control the quivering inside
Wouldn't you agree?
Baby, you and me got a groovy kind of love
When I'm feeling blue
All I have to do
Is take a look at you
Then I'm not so blue
When I'm in your arms
Nothing seems to matter
My whole world can shatter
I don't care
Wouldn't you agree?
Baby, you and me got a groovy kind of love
"Lika A Star" Corinne Bailey Ray
"Jackie Wilson Said" Van Morrison
"Concrete and Clay" Unit 4+2
"Hey Love" Stevie Wonder
@emariel - I love that song! I wish my FI wasn't so stubborn about the first dance, as I would love to dance to any Sarah song :) However, he just says that my lillieth fair phase :)
My fiance and I are both VERY shy about dancing and are using Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon." We went to a dance company in town and are leaning to do the fox trot. We had our 3rd lesson last night and we feel GREAT about the dance. The song is only about 2:20 mins so we get around the dace floor about 2 times and the song is over. PERFECT length. Just enought to show off some moves and not feel like we are on the dance floor forever.
If you like country, "I Need You" by Faith Hill & Tim McGraw. FI even likes this song and he hates country :)
Choose a song you love and a fade in and out to get one verse (the final one?) and a chorus! If you can do a nice little spin out onto the floor together (or he spins you out) it will look impressively planned AND you'll be dancing to something short!
I love that Ingrid Michaelson song, but my fiance said no way! So we chose Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" and it's a 3 minute song.
Oldies tend to be shorter. My fiance and I are dancing to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's You're All I Need to Get By.
We danced to the Wonder of You by Elvis... we picked it for the same reason as you, we were looking for something short! It's 2.5mins
you can make any song short. either ask the band if you have one of edit the music to either ut or fade out. easy peasy
I know the Beatles were suggested multiple times - but we're dancing to "I Will" by the Beatles. So sweet. I can't wait.
Ditto pp that you can edit any song to shorten it.
If you'd like a really short instrumental, look at the Dan in Real Life soundtrack. Sondre Lerche made some beatiful, sweet, instrumentals that are about 1 minute.
Cat Power's cover of the Velvet Underground's "I Found a Reason" is lovely and clocks in right around 2 minutes.
I'm not shy, but I hate dancing in front of an audience, so we just didn't do it at all. No one said anything. There's no rule that says you have to do a first dance and if it makes you uncomfortable, don't bother at all! We just had the dance start right away with everyone and I enlisted several of my girlfriends to start dancing to a fast song together right away. :)
mr shotglass and i danced to Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Calliat. It clocks in at 3:18, but we didn't start dancing until 45 seconds into it. We used that time as the "introduction."
we did a simple box step dance that my cousin taught us in a day. i'm a horrible dancer and we made it out OK.
Did you ever see Breakfast at Tiffanys? We are dancing to Moon River sung by Audrey Hepburn. Short and sweet.
If you're using a DJ, he should be able to easily fade out any song you choose - that's what our DJ will be doing for the mother/son dance since my FI doesn't like to dance at all. I forbid any fading out during our first dance!
