I finally went dress shopping! And thanks to everyone who posted in my earlier thread where I was worried I wasn’t going to fit into dresses – the store had mostly 8-14s and I got into everything although a few of the smaller 8’s wouldn’t do up (I’m a 6 top, 8 bottom street size).
Just my mom and I went and we had fun…I guess one of the last shopping weekends before Christmas + snowstorm today meant that the normally insane Saturday bridal shopping was so calm and peaceful. There were a couple people coming in and out of the store, but no other brides trying on dresses so I had personal attention from the owner of the store for 2 hours!
I tried on about 8 dresses. I didn’t get pics of all of them because some were just meh but it was so funny – I went in for lace, fit and flare with sleeves or straps. No sequins no beading and definitely NOT strapless.
But it changes so much once you try them on. I liked completely different stuff that I thought I would!
The first dress was in line with what I thought I wanted. But I didn’t like it on me. It was too big so that didn’t help but I felt it added a lot of weight and just made me look dowdy. It was Sottero and Midgely Meredith Rose. Beautiful gown but not for me. My mom loved the lace though so it was a nice start.
The second dress was definitely better! I didn’t like the key hole back or the fact that it didn’t have full sleeves but the lace was gorgeous. It made me realize I wanted more illusion lace than full lace! I was getting a better feeling. Plus this dress was SO LIGHT. IT would be amazing for summer. It was Maggie Sottero Lara:
Then I tried a lace with a high illusion neckline and back. It was beautiful and covered in sparkles and sequins. I wanted to love it more than I did, but there was something holding me back…the next dress let me figure out what that was!
And then we decided to take a lace and silhouette break and through something CRAZY into the mix. A gorgeous Essence ballgown that had just come in that they were displaying. Now ladies, I didn’t want a princess dress. Or strapless. Or anything that this dress was. But I had barely stepped into it and my face lit up. I was yelling at my mom from the change room “Noooooo….I love this dress!”. The dress was ivory over light gold. It looked like a pearl. The light gold is so light…”gold” sounds so brassy but it was really a darker pearly ivory. I am pale, with dark hair and it made me look lit up. My skin looked gorgeous. I looked alive! It was Essence D1629 in ivory over light gold. Sorry it’s not full body but my mom took these, lol. The model pictures on the website don’t do it justice. It is just so beautiful.
After being in this one for about 20 minutes, I wanted to go back to lace. I tried on another couple meh ones. I also tried on Maggie Sottero Blossom. It was sooo nice, and really really flattering for me. I didn’t take a pic (sorry!) because it wasn’t a cotendor solely because it just doesn’t suit my wedding. It felt summer or destination. It’s very structured and very flattering though – it would suit a destination or summer bride who wants lace really well!
For my last dress, the shop owner picked out one for me that combined what I had loved with the ballgown (light gold colour and embellishments) with what I thought I should want (lace, fit and flare, etc.). I pulled this dress out of the bag, ladies, and I was like…yeah, okay, should I even bother? But then I put it on. It wasn’t instant crying. But the longer I looked at it, the more I just freaking loved it. By now, I’m sold on the ivory over light gold. There is no way I’m getting plain ivory. And sold on beading. And maybe sold on strapless? More on that later…but here is Sottero and Midgely Suzette (with belt flower to the front and to the back)
So…dress shopping conclusion was to walk away and think it over. I am stil thinking I would love straps or sleeves…but seeing how good strapless looks, it’s crazy. I also think a deep v back would be lovely. But things I know I want are ivory over light gold! and beading! The owner turned the shop lights down and made me twirl so I could see the dresses sparkle…it was lovely.
I also tried on the cutest fascinator veil and lovely sparkly long tulle veils.
Any bees have input or thoughts on a dress similar to suzette, available in light gold, with straps and a deep v back?
