I just found out this week that I am pregnant! I am so excited (and a little scared–*TW* had previous MC *TW*). I am about 4.5 weeks today.
But I have scheduled my first prenatal visit for April 4, which would have me at about 6 weeks, 5 days. I am wondering if I should push it back to the next week. They will do a scan, but I am worried it might be too early to see the fetal heart beat. I just want to avoid not potentially seeing it and then panicking (even if it is too early) and having to come back/wait. Also, due to work schedule, my only options are Tuesdays. So I could move it to April 11 (though that would be a little bit of a bummer to wait).
When did some of you see the heart beat for the first time? What woud you suggest in terms of an appointment date? Keep it or reschedule?
Thanks for any advice you provide!

I’m in the uk so things are different here but I saw the midwife around 6 weeks pregnant I think. They just log you and do urine sample and basic details.
We paid privately for a nifty test (not usually done on NHS) at 10 weeks and they scanned me then to check I was 10 weeks as any less and they don’t bother doing the blood test as baby’s dna unlikely to be picked up. So we say the little baby on the screen but no heartbeat measured specifically as far as I can recall.
Around 13 weeks we had our first dating scan and saw the heartbeat then for sure

We were doing Infertility treatments and saw a heartbeat at 6w3d. We didn’t hear it until our 10 week scan but by the 6w scan, it was very easy to see! I think 6w5d will be fine. Congratulations!!!

Congrats ! At my first appointment I was 8 weeks along. They didn’t check for a heartbeat. They sent me for a dating ultrasound which took place the following week so 9 weeks I was able to see my little bean and they were able to measure the heartbeat though we weren’t able to hear it. I finally heard it for the first time at the following appointment I think I was 12 weeks. Good luck! I know it feels like forever waiting for those appointments to come I was counting down every day because I was so nervous and excited. It all goes by so quick though. Currently nursing DD who is 11 weeks and feel like I found out I was pregnant yesterday. Happy and healthy 9 months and enjoy this special time !

hogoboom2012 : Thanks for the response! Seeing the heart beat would be fine for me, I just don’t want to be in there too early and not see much…then start to worry.
UK-bee : Yeah, I think in the US, it’s a bit different. Every OB is different, but many women go in between 6-8 weeks and get scans. I already had my hcg levels drawn (because of previous early loss) and the first result was 185, so good and definitely a confirmed pregnancy so far. Waiting to hear back on my second draw.

My clinic confirmed baby’s heartbeat between 6 and 7 weeks. Congratulations to you! 🙂

I had my first OB appointment at 11 weeks and heard baby’s heartbeat and had my first ultrasound. We were able to see facial features in the ultrasound which was absolutely amazing ❤

I would probably push it back. You should be able to see the HB at 6w5d, but if you push it back by about a week and half it looks more like a baby rather than just a beating little blob. By 8.5 weeks there’s a distinguishable head and you can see the limb buds. Just my 2 cents.

I’m in the UK but paid for private scans which took place on 6w6d and 7w respectively and could see and hear the heartbeat at both via abdominal US. I’d probably keep your appointment and hopefully get another sooner if no heartbeat yet but it’s likely there will be.

U.K. Bee here. I had a scan a 6+4 due to a bleed. I saw the early pregnancy but we were a few days too early for a heartbeat. I had another scan at 9 weeks due to more bleeding and then we saw a very clear heartbeat.

annonbee857 : US Bee. My office doesn’t see you til around 8 weeks. I was almost 9 weeks when I went in for my first appointment, which included a dating US in which we saw the heartbeat. I want to say we heard it then too, but I can’t remember entirely. At almost 12 weeks I went back again for a routine checkup and the tried to hear the heartbeat on the doppler, but it was too early and they couldn’t hear it. I admit that was really stressful, even though they said it was totally normal. At my next appointment they heard it no problem with the doppler!

I’m in the US and the first appointment I should’ve seen/heard the heartbeat was my 12 week appointment. I had some spotting so I went in for an early scan at 6 weeks and again at 8 weeks and was able to see the heartbeat on the ultrasound at both appointments. My first “normal” appointment at the ob was at 8 weeks but that was just a meeting with the intake nurse so they didn’t check my vitals or take a listen to baby. Happy to report good results from my 12 week scan and a strong heartbeat heard on the Doppler at my 13 week appointment! I was lucky baby was right up front for the Doppler. Best of luck!

I am 10+1 now but has an US in the ER at 7 weeks (I had a bleed) and we were able to see the flicker of HB at 147. I then had my scheduled appointment at 7w5d and the HB was up to 157. I had a private scan today and HB was 153 and I was able to hear it.

Thanks for the insights everyone!
GrannyPantiesRock : Thanks for the insights. I am struggling between wanting confirmation earlier that things are on track and seeing what you mentioned. Having had an early loss, I just have major anxiety (as I know many women do anyway). So part of me prefers the earlier one to just see that at least things are progressing. Then, I feel like I could wait (though not patiently) until a later date to have an ultrasound or see more of the baby forming. I am not sure what I will do though.
