So this is our 3rd cycle TTC and its exhausting… emotionally of course. Today we went and talked to a pharmacist about OPK’s and we picked up the First Response OPK with 20 tests (i even thought out loud that this would probably be good for 2 cycles)… knowing little to nothing about how they work i asked when to start taking the test to (obviously) detect O. The pharmacist told me on day 10 and i’m about there so we bought it and went home… now that i’m reading the instructions, they say it is necessary to start on day 5. Would it really be a big deal to start now? should i return it for one i can use now if there even is one i can use now (this cycle) or should i suck it up and wait till next cycle.? i’m just a little peeved that she didnt have the right info and i spent all this money to find out that i may not be ableto use it this month.

i never start OPK testing before day 10, but that’s because i usually ovulate between days 14-16. when i do start testing, i do it twice a day.
really though… i think you should use cheaper OPKs.
Here, you can get 100 OPKs and 20 HPT for $30: http://www.amazon.com/Combo-Ovulation-Pregnancy-Test-Strips/dp/B001E1Y1X6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1364955866&sr=8-4&keywords=wondfo+ovulation+tests

I don’t think you need to worry. How long are your cycles, usually & when’s your aproximate temp shift? Do you have a chart link? I’d take 1 or 2 tests in the coming days and see if you get a positive. Your surge is probably going to happen fairly soon but this cycle is by NO MEANS a bust.

@MrsRugbee: Hey, i’m not very well educated with this stuff… from the day AF started… i’m on day ten. I dont temp and i’ve downloaded a charting app but dont really understand it really. I have an ovilaution predictor app and it says i should be ovulating in 6 days (the 8th is sposed to be my most fertile) and AF is sposed to start again on the 22… i seem to be pretty on the nose with this stuff.

You’re fine if you typically have a ~28 day cycle! Some people O as early as CD 10 (about 24 cycle days total) so the instructions recommend day 5 just to be safe (and so you buy more tests:)) I don’t O until CD 20 or so (34 total cycle days) so I didn’t start OPKs until CD 13-14 and it worked for me!

you should really start temping. it’s the most helpful and informative thing you can do while TTC.
then join fertility friend. easiest charting website (and phone app) ever. also, most of the girls here use it so you will be in good company.

@Pappy8: I don’t ovulate until day 19 so starting my OPK’s on day 5 would be completely pointless. I would start on day 12 to be honest. I would test in the morning and in the evening to make sure you don’t miss your surge. I also second @rosworms: suggestion to start temping and charting. Have you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility. The better educated you are the less stressful everything seems. This is our 10th cycle TTC, if you have any questions PM me 🙂
