I'm going tomorrow so I'm super psyched!! I made an appt with David's Bridal.
Any advice for this nervous yet excited bee?
What were some of your experiences during your first time? Any tips and tricks I need to know? Who did you go with and were they helpful in your dress choice?
Thanks in advance!!
Be open minded
bring pics of what you like and don't like
bring water and a snack
don't forget your camera!
I had a fantastic experience at DB! I brought only my MOH - she's direct, to the point, and doesn't sugar coat anything. Just what I needed!
above all - have fun!
@GroovyHippieChick: Great advice! I didn't even think to bring pics of what I like and don't like! Or water and a snack!
I'm glad to hear you had a fantastic experience with them, that makes me less nervous! Thank you!
Be open to try on stuff you might not like in pictures or online. Everything I loved looked terrible and everything I didn't like I loved when I put it on. I ended up with a dress that has everything I didn't want and I absolutely love it! Just be open to try things on you might not like, you might look fantastic in it!
@Snow2bunny: I hear that a lot from other people who have gone dress shopping before! They said that I will never know what really does look good on me if I don't try things on!
Thank you!
Davids Bridal allows pics on the floor so we better see a big post full of them tomorrow!
@GroovyHippieChick: Oh good to hear! I was kind of worried we wouldn't be allowed to take pictures!
LoL I'll charge up my camera tonight! Good thing I have a day off tomorrow so I can psych myself up for this appointment!!
@KeeKalena: No problem, you will know the right dress when you put it on.... I know it sounds crazy, it did to me too but guess what? I knew when I walked out in it, made me cry and all my BM and mom cried too! Have fun it's a blast!
@Snow2bunny: Oooohhh I'm so excited now! I'm jsut scared I'll be one of those brides that are torn between two dresses!
I'm hoping I have that "This is the dress" moment too!
Oh YAY!!! That's so exciting! Definately bring pictures of dresses you have seen and that you like. I did that and ended up buying the dress that I had saved for last :-)
Keep an open mind for sure and have fun! Take lots of pictures :-)
@KeeKalena: You should be excited, you will have tons of fun! I too loved two dresses but if that happens try them both on again and you will know which one feels right. Walk around for a few minutes with both of them on so you can feel how you move and the weight of the dress.
@couawilou: I definitely will! Maybe I can bring pics at our meet-up!!
@Snow2bunny: So eventually you knew which was THE ONE. OMG I can't believe this is happening...I've been dreaming of this my whole teenage and adult life!!
@KeeKalena: Yes I did narrow it down to two but I had tried so many on that the one I got was tried on like way before the second one so once I tried it on again I knew it was the one compared to the second one I had in mind. I'm so excited for you, let us know how it goes!
@Snow2bunny: Oh man, I don't even wanna think about how many dresses I gotta try on tomorrow.
I'm also anxious about having to be almost naked in front of strangers. My mom doesn't even see me without a top on! I have very bad body issues and it's affecting me in that way!
@KeeKalena: Don't worry about being almost naked. They are very professional and NEVER see you naked. The way they lift the dress on you is you put your arms straight up in the air and they have the dress up high on their arms covering their faces and drop it down onto you. Anyway that's how my lady did it and it was very professional. I hope your experience is the same so you don't have to worry about it.
If you are worried about them seeing you "almost naked" consider buying a shapeware garment. Some salons offer them but I don't think DB does. Something like this.

@Snow2bunny: Ahh ok gotcha! *phew*
@luvmyDwight: Awesome idea! I'm gonna need one of those anyways hahahaha!
I did this too, I got mine at Victoria Secret. I thought it was wonderful until my dress lady told me try the dress on with out. I looked better in the dress without the shapeware then I did with it. Just my experince.
don't bring a lot of people. It will only drive you crazy.
Definitely try something on you would never imagine trying out. I did not want a ballgown but ended up buying one!!
Don't feel like you have to make a decision right then.
Wear make up so you get a better idea for the day of
@Snow2bunny: I was actually looking at long line bras...I saw them at another thread here.
@Gabrielle123: I've got the whole day to pretty myself up! I'm also gonna try and do my hair the same way I would like to have it done on the big day.
I'm bringing 4 people...my mom, MOH and 2 of my BMs. LOL! Thanks for all the advice!
@KeeKalena: That's a good idea too. Just since I was dead set on wearing shapeware my advice is to try it without as well, you might be suprised like I was. My dress fits so good without shapeware or a bra! So panties and garter is all I am wearing under lol. I was so suprised!
1. Try different styles of dresses. You never know what will look good on you untill you try.
2. Take pictures and see them before you buy it! This is very important!! (I bought a dress I thought I liked, and when I got home and saw the pictures I realized that it was to white/bright to my liking! And that I really disliked it) This will also help you clear off whatever doubts you may have.
3. Please, oh please, do not buy the first dress you like! You may think, after trying a few bad dresses that you´ll never find a dress that looks good on you. And suddenly you try one that looks great and you think "this is the one!" but guess what? You´ll find a LOT of dresses that will look amazing on you, you just need to know what to look for. So don´t make your choice based on that "relieve" feeling. (yep, this happened to me! I tried some princess style dresses and didn´t like any of them (they kind of ate me, you know?) and then I tried a mermaid one and thought "this looks great". Well, guess what? I ended up buying a second dress a month later! terrible, I know... but I really didn´t like my first white, bright dress! So I ran to buy a lace romantic ivory one that I loved and that was everything I wanted in a dress, to beging with!
4. If you think you should stretch a bit your budget to achieve the style of dress you love, and you can afford it without further complications, I highly recommend you do it. This was one of the factors that made me make my first dress mistake.. I thought the price was really good and that it would be a terrible waste to spend more money on a dress, since that one looked good enough (even though I could afford a much more expensive dress. You see, I like to save money whenever possible!). Well, as it is I ended up spending twice as that in my second dress (belt and cathedral veil included lol), though my mom bought my second dress as a present (lol, I thank her soo much for that!!!)... But anyway it feels horrible to feel you wasted your money in a dress you didn´t like at the end!
5. What counts: a) that the dress looks good on you. b) that you actually love the style of the dress (it´s not enough that it "just" look good. because you might ending up regreting your choice as I did).
6. Even if everybody screams "omg that dress is gorgeous on you. That´s the one", you should go home, look at the pics and think about that "fabulous" dress. Then, if you are really sure, buy it. Again this happened to me. My sister and mom were "wowww that looks great".. And it sure did look great on me, and yes the dress was really beautiful. So I bought it. But it was not my style at all, and that was the big mistake.
I hope this helps you with your dress shopping! Hopefully you won´t make the same mistake I did (I still feel terrible about it)...
Hugs!
@Snow2bunny: Ok I'll keep that in mind! No bra needed huh? That''s awesome!! I don't have big boobs anyways so if I could get a dress with some support I'll be good as gold LOL!
@Fairy_in_love: Holy moly great advice!!
Thanks for taking the time to re-live your dress shopping experience and let me know what to watch out for. This is exactly what I was afraid of...feeling like it's the one and then experiencing dress regret. -_-'
I'm also planning on losing some weight before the big day so I don't know if these dresses will look the same on me once I lose some more weight.
@KeeKalena: Yeah I know I was just as suprised. I don't have big boobs either. My dress is tight right under my boobs so total support and they look way bigger then they are lol. Most of the dresses I tried on were better without the bra then with.
@Snow2bunny: What kind of dress did you end up getting? A-line, mermaid, trumpet, ball gown...
@KeeKalena: I'm not as small as the model but close to the same size as this bride in this pic wearing my same dress.
@KeeKalena: no problem!
I really wouldn´t want anyone to have the "dress regret feeling" I got.. I always thought, whenever I read about it in the boards, "how can anyone buy a dress and then not like it?? why did they buy it then if they didn´t like it that much?" Well, I found out why! lol... Anyway I felt so depressed, that one of the first thoughts I had after I got my second dress was "I have to post this in WB", so to advice other girls!
Anyway, I hope you post the pics after your shopping day!
P.S: forgive my gammar! lol I´m usually careful when typing, but since my native language is spanish, and I´m writing really fast today, I´m probably making many mistakes...
@Snow2bunny: OMG gorgeous!!!! I love it!
@Fairy_in_love: Yes, I have the same thoughts as well but I guess you won't really know until it happens to you! And don't worry...your grammar is fine! No mistakes noticed! ^_~
@KeeKalena: Thank you. Send us some pics after your time out today! Have fun and enjoy!
@Snow2bunny: I will! Which reminds me, gotta charge up my camera!!!
Don't let them pressure you... and walk away if you aren't sure it's THE one. They run alot of sales and are good at making you think you will be missing the deal of the century if you miss "this sale". Best of luck! In a nutshell-- Dress shopping can be fun... don't settle at the first appointment if your not sure
@redefine69: Thank you for the great advice!! My Mom and BMs will keep me level-headed LOL.
@GroovyHippieChick: My appt is at 6pm, in 3 hrs! Eeeeek!! My MOH and BMs want to bring their own bubbly and pretend it's SYTTD! Lol!
@KeeKalena: Yay!!! I'm so excited to hear how it goes! Have fun!!!!
@Snow2bunny: Thank you! I'll definitely update you guys when I get home!
Thank you again all for your wonderful advice and well wishes! It means a lot to me!
I'm going to be stalking this thread. LOL. You have until 11 pm EST to post pics.
