I am going to go dress shopping tomorrow for the first time and was hoping for some suggestions/advice.

    Some questions I have:

    1) How to wear my hair?

    2) Undergarmets?

    3) Shoes (I will MAYBE be wearing 1 inch at the wedidng so I don't think this is a huge deal)

    4) Picture Etiquete?

    5) Sharing sample/inspiration pictures?

The shop we are going to carries:

    • Allure Bridal
    • Maggie Sottero
    • Casablanca Bridal
    • Mon Cheri Bridal
    • Bonnie
    • Mori Lee
    • Alfred Angelo
    • Raylia
    • Private Label
    • The Dessy Group

Have you had any success with these designers?  I have a really low budget so I am nervous.  Also, I do not think I want strapless so that seems to limit things.

    Thanks for the advice!

    first to answer your questions:

    1. wear your hair how you think you'll be wearing it on your wedding day, and it helps to put on a bit of makeup too

    2. wear something you're comfortable in and ideally in skin toned. the sales associate will likely be helping you in and out of dresses, so she'll see everything! don't go too skimpy!

    3. it's not a huge deal if you plan to wear flats or 1 inch heels.

    4. always ask first! if they say no, try to sneak some in in the dressing room because we all want to see them :P

i think a lot of brides on here had success with maggie. i almost bought a mori lee gown but found another one i loved, and the mori lee was not strapless!

good luck!! and don't forget to have fun :)

    In order:

    1. I wore my hair down and brought a pony tail holder so I could put it up if I wanted to. How do you think you'll want your hair for the wedding? You might try to mimic that.

    2. Undergarments aren't that important since the shop will have one you can use, but just make sure you're wearing some. ;) I'd go with nude color and your own strapless bra if you have one that's comfortable (even dresses with straps sometimes need a strapless bra).

    3. Shoes with the heel height you ultimately want.

    4. Ask the store about pictures. A lot of them won't let you take them, but some will.

    5. I've never brought an inspiration picture to a shop, but I would have if I'd gone to a higher end salon where the salespeople actually find you dresses that you might like. Instead, I've brought the style numbers of the dresses I actually wanted to try by the designers I knew they carried, and I tried them if they had them.

My dress is an Allure Bridals and so I've had some success with them. ;) They also have a few really nice dresses that are not strapless. Maggie Sottero gowns also tend to be quite flattering. I haven't tried any of the others.

    Good luck, and have fun!

The best advice I can give is to just be open about trying on a lot of styles. I think the thing that most surprised me about dress shopping is how different everything looks when it's actually on your body. And, because wedding dresses are just made better than most every day clothes, they also fit better. So when it came down to it, I had a very strong misconception of what looked best on me. I went in thinking I could only wear a-line dresses, and it turned out trumpets and mermaids looked best on me.

So, keep an open mind! Try on at least one dress is each sillhouette, and from there, determine what you like, and what looks best and narrow down from there.

Always sleep on any final decision. Vera Wang sales associates told me that when I went to their salon. Never buy a dress on the spot, and never let a sales person talk you into it if it's your first time trying it on.

As far as what to bring with you in the underwear department, I can't recommend enough that you wear decent panties! Haha. My first time out, I didn't think about the fact that I would be mostly naked the whole time, and I was mortified about my granny panties that day. Because you're just trying on dresses, you don't need special bras. If a dress you want to try on requires a strapless or something else, most salons will have some for you to use. I always just wore a regular bra in a nude color.

Wear your hair as you would normally. I played with updos and wearing it down with each dress.

Each salon has their own policies on picture-taking. Some allow it, and some don't. Just ask each store before snapping away.

Don't worry about shoes, either. You don't need those until your fittings. If you want to try on heels with a dress, again, the store should have some extra pairs for you to use.

I hope that helps! Wedding dress shopping is an interesting experience. Don't bring too many people with you because that just means more opinions and more pressure. I always brought one trusted friend, and it never regretted that. Good luck and have fun!

I wish I had read this post before I went dress shopping!! : ) I know this is kind of random, but I would also say get plenty of sleep beforehand and bring a bottle of water. I went dress shopping on days when I was already exhausted and it definitely makes the process harder.

Thanks for all of the comments.  I am really nervous about going since none of my BM's will be available to come.  Just my mom and my sister (who is only 15).  I really want it to be fun and not stressful but I'm sure you guys all know mother daughter shopping trips do not always go well.

I have not decided about my hair yet, I know I want to look like myself just like I would any other day (ie nothing way out in left field) so maybe half up half down.

Also, was knowing what style of veil important when looking at dresses?  I know this first time around we are just going to be looking at shapes but does it matter how long you think your veil will be and if you will wear it over your face or not?

Also on shapes/styles, what are some common terms?  I think I like "off the shoulder" but also just normal tank top style (not spaghetti strap).  How exactly do they define "A Line"?

Thanks so much for all the help, I really hope I have some pictures to share, or at least style numbers so I can get more opinions!

I agree that being open to different silhouettes and styles is really important. It seems like most people end up in the opposite style that they envisioned for themselves. As for the names or definitions of certain styles or cuts, I would utilize the knowledge of your salesperson. They should be able to tell you what qualifies as an A line, etc.

I wore my hair up because that is how I plan on wearing it for the wedding and it really helped when trying on veils because they were easy to place and remove. I also recommend wearing similar style jewelry of what you plan on wearing. I knew that I wanted to wear some sort of drop style earring, so I brought a pair with me.

I also second the idea of bringing water and even snacks!

I can't believe I've been doing this long enough to feel like an expert LOL...

    1) How to wear my hair? Wear it up or down, depending on how you'll have it done for the big day.

    2) Undergarmets? Easy to take off bra.  Be prepared to get close with your sales person :)

    3) Shoes - Heels.  Instance confidence booster too :)

    4) Picture Etiquete?  Some stores allow.  Some don't.

    5) Sharing sample/inspiration pictures?  Helpful.

    How exciting! Good luck!

My dress was Allure and was nice but also not too pricey.

I took printouts of what I liked and found online so they have an idea of what you like. But do also try other styles/materials- you never know you may be surprised.

And my best friend of the day was my SPANX underwear. It really made a difference to smooth everything out and flatten my tummy a bit.

Have fun and enjoy the experience!
