- Wedding: Seattle, WA
My wedding is almost a year and a half away but I went dress shopping because I’ve been dying to go to the plus-size-only boutique Della Curva since before I got engaged. I’m a fat bride who loves my body, but I was still nervous to try on dresses for the first time, especially when I heard from the receptionist how important it is to wear spanx (I loathe them and will *not* be wearing any knd of intentionally slimming undergarments on my wedding day). But with my best friend by my side, we made the trek from San Diego to LA and had an amazing time.
I wasn’t expecting to have an “a-ha!” moment but I did–three times! And at the end of the day I found a dress that I want so badly to be my wedding dress that I almost bought it then and there. But that’s silly right? 18 months before my wedding??
Anyway, here are the pics with links for reference. I’m 5’4″ and a street size 22/24. Tell me what you think!
Dress #1: a huge champagne/blush tulle ballgown – Allure Style W341
Thoughts: I truly felt like a princess. It was amazing. And also: really heavy! They can take out layers if you want but this dress could be a nightmare if you are prone to overheating or get overwhelmed by the amount of fabric you are wearing.
Dress 2: a lacy drop-waist A-line – Allure Style W322
Thoughts: with my 60-inch hips this fit more like a fit-and-flare than an A-line. I really liked the shape, but the neckline and the all-over lace wasn’t doing it for me.
Dress 3: a dreamy empire waist gown – Wtoo Style 17493 “Jasmine”
Thoughts: I didn’t have a “this is my dress!” moment but I felt very lovely and ethereal in this dress. It was also very easy to move around in.
Dress 4: a lace drop-waist A-line/ballgown – Watters Style 5078B “Ailen”
Thoughts: hated it.
Dress 5: the most gigantic poufy peach tulle ballgown – designer unknown
Thoughts: I thought I’d like a dress with sleeves but I hated how it looked so I pushed them down–and still didn’t really like it!
Dress 6: a lace and tulle gown with detachable peplum skirt – Essense of Australia Style D1706
With the peplum:
Without the peplum:
Thoughts: I didn’t like how this looked on the hanger but I loved it so much ON that I took about a dozen photos. This and dress 1 are tied for second-favorite.
And finally, my favorite:
Dress 7: a light organza ballgown with embroidered lace bodice – Essense of Australia Style D1702
check out the flow of the skirt:
Thoughts: I was really only interested in tulle gowns but the embroidered lace on the bodice of the dress caught my eye. The moment it went on I got a really excited giddy feeling, and then when it was completely on and pinned correctly I was in awe. It twirls beautifully and doesn’t feel heavy like a lot of the other dresses I tried on. It fits the “feeling” of the kind of wedding I want to have. My fiance saw a photo of me in it and actually started to cry.
So what do I do?? Am I being silly for waiting? Or sillier for considering purchasing a dress a year and a half from my wedding? Are there others you liked better?
Thanks all for your input!
