Hey there Bee’s!
The FI and I bought a house and are moving in TWO weeks (HOLY COW!) I’ve been kind of the brains behind everything and the FI just has to sign on it all. I’m wondering if you guys could give me any advice or like a little checklist of things that need to be done before we move in? At what point do we call the electric/water companies to say we’re taking ownership? When do we go to the post office and change our address? Sam with our drivers licenses? Currently we’ve been shopping for new carpet for the master bedroom and finally agreed on one, we will be able to get that installed the week we move in which will be nice before we get the heavy furtinute in there. Any advice is appreciated! 🙂

Congrats on your house!
You can usually call the utilities ahead of time and tell them when your move-in date is, and they’ll get you on their schedule. Better to do that now if you can, because it usually takes our utilities a few days to show up. In our state, you can get the license changed anywhere from the move in date to 90 days after moving, but I think some other states may require you to have lived at the house for a set amount of time first. I think we did our post office address change a few days before we moved because it’ll take them a few days to process the change anyway.
Also just a random tip – when you move, have a roll of toilet paper, paper towels, and trash bags in an easily accessible location, like a bag of essential items or a box at the front of the moving truck. You’ll be glad that you did 😛

I would call utilities now like PP said. Your former home owners might have already set a shut off date, and sometimes turning back on can be a pain if you have a full shut off. Especially gas, because they will need access to your home to turn it back on. Nothing worse than starting out in your new home without hot water for a few days!
You can access the USPS site and change your address online, and set a date for your change of address. Easy-peasy, really.
When you send in your monthly bills, I would start writing your new address on the back of them, so the next cycle they will be sent to your new home, and there are no delays.
Arrange all your day of move things. If you are having movers or a moving truck, definatly get those contacted/rented.
Also, start packing. You will always be happy about this!

We get posession of our first house on Saturday!
It’s a little different for us as far as utilities go. We have to read our gas, electric, and water meters the day we move in and call in the readings to the apropriate utility company. That way if the previous owner skipped out on his last water bill, we won’t be responsible for it.
As for changing mailing addresses, we are going to start after we get posession. Our current address is FMIL’s so any mail that we miss will go to her, which is only 10 or so blocks away.
We are cleaning and painting the first couple days, and then slowly starting to move our furniture and stuff from his mom’s. Luckily she doesn’t care if it takes us 3 days or 3 weeks to empty out her basement. FI works out of town and leaves Tuesday morning so I would rather move leisurely and not have to be super rushed and stressed for his 3 days in the house before he’s gone for 3 weeks!
For the license, here you have to do it within 2 weeks of moving. I think FI and I are going to go and do the change on Friday. Or before we start painting on Sat.
