Honestly, I definitely wouldn;t buy anything yet.  It’s still a full 2 + years from your date.  You may change ideas of what you want, sizes, budgets…there are so many factors that will affect the dress.  If you’re going to try them on, remember what you love, but, I highly recommend holding off until about a year out before committing to The Dress.

I’ve gone to look at dresses already and I found the style that I love. Word of advice though, don’t fall in love with any particular exact style because wedding dresses are very often discontinued. Every 6 months new wedding dresses come out and many styles are lost according to my coordinator. So pick the style of dress, such as ball gown, a-line or trumpet, etc. that best suits your body, and the type of top and material that you want, figure out what styles look best on you now. Buy later when you have the funds and the body you want to get the dress.

I’ve had a bit of a look around websites at styles I like, but nowhere near looking for dresses yet!

What is the general rule of thumb for how far out to start shopping? Given it takes 3-4mths to ship them & allowing time for alterations… 6-9mths prior? 12mths prior? I have no idea!

@lily.whitford:  I’m going there next month! I’ll let everyone know how it is. The dress I LOVE is there now and I know everyone says to wait until sometime next year, but if it looks as amazing on me as it does on the website, I can’t imagine that I will ever change my mind about it.

@kat2014:  So happy I am not the only one dress shopping super early. Congrats on finding your dress (I’m a little late haha).

I know I’m super late to this board, but I’m a June 2014 bride who already has her dress ordered, her shoes, her veil, her wedding party, her baker/cake contract, her florist, and her photographers.  So y’all can start planning and not feel ashamed!  Wink

I have my dress “vision” – I’ve seen a lovely evening gown (but on a Chinese knock-off site), as well as a similar Allure Bridals frock. I’m on a budget though, so not sure how much the Allure is. Also I want it in silver, not white or ivory… Also trying to lose weight, so don’t want to get a dress too soon, as I’m hoping to be smaller…

I think I might be going Plan B, calling upon a former co-worker who is also a dressmaker (has done heaps of wedding dresses) to see if we can create a hybrid of my 2 dresses…
