It’s likely the tech will show you the screen so you can see the heartbeat fluttering on it. Otherwise, there is not much to tell – I think the doc will tell you your dating info based on the size.

Purplelicious:  Depends, how far along are you?  when I went in for the first time to see my doctor I got several things done in that visit.

1. She confirmed I was indeed pregnant, with a pee test and an ultrasound.

2. she took my vitals, did a pap, blood work, lots of questions were asked.

3. told me to come back for my 8 week confirmation of the heartbeat.  I was about 5 weeks along.

I saw the nurse that was there for my entire pregnancy, the nurse who did the bloodwork for the clinic, ultrasound tech, and the doctor herself who spoke to me for a good bit.  I felt very reassured and comforted despite finding out I was pregnant (we were not trying).

Purplelicious:  At my first ultrasound- the tech told us the heart rate, and that everything looked good.

Different offices have different policies.

It’s more than likely that they will have to do a transvaginal at this point. By 7 weeks you should be able to see the yolk sac, fetal pole and hopefully the heartbeat flickering. When I had mine the tech told me exactly what she saw and showed me the screen, we got to see a tiny little gummy bear, the yolk sac, the gestational sac, and the flicker of the heartbeat. It is very scary this early, totally understand your fears. I hope everything goes well for you!!

Purplelicious:  I had my first US at my first appointment at 6w1d.

In my doc’s office, the nurse prepped everything, but it was a internal US, so the doctor was the one actually doing the US. She turned the monitor so that my husband and I could see it and showed us what was going on and where the heartbeat was and the yolk sac.

Purplelicious:  well there not much to tell at this point other then just verifying the sac and fetal pole and heartbeat are there. You may see the heartbeat but dont freak if you dont…. depends on the machines. They should be able to pick it up and measure the HR but you may not get to actually hear (We saw it beating the 1st 2 u/s but I didnt actually HEAR it until I had a doctors appt when I was almost 15w with a doppler…. they just dont have audio at the u/s places here I guess). The baby will probably just look like a little smooshed raspberry/gummy bear as well 🙂

Depends on what they use as well (some places use only external attachments, some do transvag) I’ve never had a transvag, and the u/s tech said they do have them but they generally use them for other types of exams but typically not OB work…which I thought was funny. She used a few diff hand held ones in my 20w scan…apparently diff ones go to diff depths!!
