Jumping in on this thread. I need to lose my belly and love handles before end of year when I go dress shopping!

All variations of of plank and side planks–added bonus of working arms and shoulders too!

But, unfotunately, you can’t spot reduce. You can do situps until the cows come home and that doesn’t mean you’ll lose belly fat. You have to lose weight to lose fat.

The best way to work your abs, really, is by using them while you do something else. Crunches etc. only work such a tiny part of the abdominal wall!

So things like pushups — you have to hold your core with all your might while you do pushups, so that’s a good one. Planks as well, of course.

I started doing yoga a few months ago and since then, my abs have become ridiculous. Why? Because I have to use them and hold my core constantly! So look up some yoga balance poses and give those a go as well. I find things like that to be more effective at building muscle over the whole abdominal wall, and they’re more fun than just doing crunches since you almost don’t notice how hard you’re working them 🙂

Core workouts & dance cardio!! You are working out your abs without realizing it. I have noticed more definition in my abs without 1 single situp or crunch!

s2bmrscook:  What is your lifting routine like? If you aren’t doing compound lifts, I would add those. Compound moves like squats and deadlifts necessarily require you to engage your core, and won’t require you to add extra movements to specifically target your core.

s2bmrscook:  I love it! I was already in pretty good shape when I started, but now my body looks better than it ever has (and that includes when I was a 16-year-old hardcore ballerina). My abs are outta control and it’s almost entirely from doing yoga 🙂

Also — you said you lift weights. Free weights or machines? Lifting free weights (and heavy — as much as you can lift while still using good form for 6-8 reps) is going to force you to hold your core tightly as well, so just keeping up with that is helping the abs along as well!

iarebridezilla:  Yes my power yoga classes leave my abs so sore! I workout harder in my yoga classes than in my bootcamp classes!
