I’m a street size 18 and I fit into 18s the first time I went dress shopping. I’ve lost 8 pounds since then and I’m eyeing some dresses that come in a 16 and lower… I’m wondering if there’s a way they can clip it onto me or something so that I could get an idea of what it would look like on me. The dress that I’m interested in can be special ordered in an 18 or higher but I am not comfortable ordering something like that sight unseen.

They have big clips they put to help you imagine it. Like this. Congrats on the weight loss:)

They should definitely have clips, most places do. I had to drive a long ways to try on my dream dress which they only had in a size 26….. i am a 16. The consultant had to roll the fabric and then clip it. she did the same for the front and the back so I could get decent pictures.
i had to hold the front tight because the clips were not working too great.

If the sample is too small they can zip or lace it as much as they can and then clip the open back to your bra strap. It won’t look great from the back, but it will be on and from the front you’ll be able to see how it will look. Be prepared to have the dress put on over your head though, because if the sample is a bit too small it may not go over your hips so stepping in won’t always work.
If the consultants don’t immediately try to clip the open back to your bra strap, ask them to and they will.
I’m a street size 16W, by the way. And the dress I actually bought was a size 14 so it definitely did NOT fit. But we got it on enough and I got to see how it would really look.
