I'm in the same boat as you, it seems. I'm getting married on the lake ground near a barn, where the reception will be. I want the height of a heel but the ease of walking on the uneven terrain that flats provide. so as of right now i'm thinking of buying wedges.
However, in response to your question, I actually think cute flats might be best, but that's simply an opinion based on the fact that heels can easily get stuck in the ground. Sorry I can't be more helpful! Good luck with the shoe search! Can't wait to see what you decide!
I would urge you to think about what the floor of the barn looks like. Does it have small cracks between the boards? I got married on a covered bridge, and my heels got stcuk in the boards during rehearsal! I fell over backwards! During the wedding, I had to make sure I was walking in the middle of the boards. It made things a little difficult.
The floor is just plain hardwood floor (no cracks) BUT there is a small layer of hay! That's why I'm leaning towards flats... but I think as long as the heel is thick & not too big it would be ok? Any ladies ever have a hay floor?
hi, i happened to come across your post, ive been looking EVERYWHERE for a barn setting for my 2012 wedding in va beach. What barn did you choose?!? any help, ideas, or advice that you found along the way in your search would be greatly appreciated! thanks so much. & congrats!!

I'm getting married in a rustic log cabin and I am wearing flats. I chose flats because while I think heels look nice, it was more important to me that I be comfortable on my wedding day.
Have you considered using something like SoleMates? http://www.thesolemates.com/ If you decide you want heels or find some you love they can be great! I ordered a pair and they give the heel about three times the surface area so they won't sink in the ground and make it easier to walk on uneven surfaces. I'm getting married outside too and couldn't decide on a pair of flats or wedges I liked so these are my life saver!
Just a thought!

Ok guys. I'm in a canundrum here! I'm getting married in November in a barn... which has hay inside! Our ceremony will also be outside in the gardens. I can't decide if I want heels or flats. I love the look of heels, but think flats will be more practical. I don't really want to change out, I'd like to only buy one pair and I'm a major photography gal (I do it on the side) & don't wait to see two pairs of shoes in my pictures!
Our wedding is going to be rustic & vintage-inspired.
So... the million dollar question.. heels or flats?
Here are some heels I was thinking:
& Flats:
Oh, and for the really plain shoes, like all the heels except the last pair and the third flats, I was thinking of buying shoe clips like these:
And of course you need to see my dress to make a judgement! It's Maggie Sottero Carmella. I didn't know I was buying the dress that day, it was unexpected, so I don't have any pictures of me in it yet:
