I would just go for your basic home sets. You don’t want to be worried about formal china and flatware!

@NellieBelly37:  I honestly don’t think that most people use Solo cups and paper plates for holiday dinners. Our home environment includes china plates and stainless steel cutlery for every day, silverware for special occasions.

I do think the single soldiers will be happy to use anything. They will be concentrating on having a good time.

I would use real dishes and cutlery. It doesn’t need to be expensive.

@NellieBelly37:  Not offended- just don’t think it’s that common.

You don’t have to get good china. Places like Target, WalMart, KMart etc have great ckearance prices on service for 4 sets all the time. You don’t even really need all  5 of the pieces that are typically included.

Do you live anywhere near an Ikea? You can buy dinner plates and side plates and that’s all you’ll really need. Even Dollar stores have dinner plates.

I would decide how many place settings of dishes/silverware you want, and plan for those.  You can always borrow extras or pick some up.  Our friends recently hosted Thanksgiving for over 20 people… many people lent plates, silverware, and chairs.

We went with 12 place settings of dishes.  We have 12 sets of silverware as well, though I kept our older silverware for future large dinners/etc if we have over 12 people.  You can also get some inexpensive extras at Ikea, Target, etc, if you just want extras.  But I would put off worrying about those details until you’re a little closer to Thanksgiving, since that’s what you’re thinking about…. maybe you’ll have a better idea of who’s coming!

@NellieBelly37:  Dollar Tree has nice looking dinnerware. If your local store doesn’t have what you need , you can order online and pick it up at your local store with free shipping.
