So i found this picture online of a bouquet i just loved! Originally i was making all my flowers, and sadly had already spent the money and made them. AND then i changed my colors and well they just werent going to work anymore! So now i was thinking real flowers. Well this picture looked like it had 2 dozen roses and i was prepared for it to be expensive but i was thinking around the lines of $50-75... I get to the floral shop and ask for a price quote, she goes in back and returns a few moments later. That will be $150. I said "for all four?" "no ma'am thats for one" WHAT! are you nuts?! i can buy them flowers at walmart for $10 a dozen!! So i left there thinking hell no if im payin 600 for flowers.. i got more things that need my money than this.. so I went to walmart! got 2 dozen white roses at $10 a pc, and for $5 got a set of grass/leaves. I went home, tore all the leaves off the roses, tore the outside dingy petals off, and starting putting it together. and VOILA... for $25 dollars i got a bouquet that looks IDENTICAL to the one they wanted 150 for!!! So im making them myself!!! All this wedding planning has really gotten me thinking of becoming a wedding planner. I could totally do this for a living, i love it!!

Wow, you're amazing! So pretty! It looks just like it to me.  I plan on doing my own flowers too, and hadn't decided yet to go for real or silk, I think you just helped me make my decision!  Could you maybe post a tutorial as to how you did it?

    @mrsawesome09-

I got the flowers from walmart. 2 dozen white roses. i made sure to get ones that looked relatively closed still. i bought a backage of greens too as they have the long green grass looking things in there for the outside and the leaves. this is how i did it:

1.) Tear off all the leaves from the roses

2.) One by one look at each rose and tear off the outside petals that may make it look open or may be wilted.

3.) Start with the ones that are closed the most and add all of the others around it. Keep a firm grip on the roses as they will then form versus just standing up.

4.) This takes a little time: adjust the roses by pulling them up or down until you get it nice and even.

5.) add some leaves from the green package so that the dark green is facing the roses.

6.) then add the long stem grass, folding some so its a loop.

7.) Wrap with floral tape, this part was kinda tricky and if you had someone to help that would be great.

8.) then wrap with ribbon and cut stems to length desired :)

good luck. if you ever have any problems and need help just email me at Rachelsmiley32@hotmail.com

Some florist charge an insane amount for the same reason some dress designers do for simple designs...because they can. It's a convience fee of having someone else do the flowers for you.

There are reasons flowers CAN be expensive (out of season, bad crops, rare color) just like dresses (hand sewn, detailed, fabric) but when it comes to the basics like white roses there's no way they should cost that much.

Even if they charged $60/hr for their time it wouldn't take them more than an hour to put that together, plus the cost of the flowers is going to be cheaper to them than a retailer, so max that should be $80-90.

I don't understand florists either. It's highway robbery, totally. (No offense florists!)

well i think they charge so much because they can. everyone has to make money.. this is how they make money, it makes sense but I HOWEVER... can do just about anything myself and therefore do not like to pay for things when i know i could do it myself.. and like my fiance sais "im a cheap wad" lol... but if i wasnt able to make them and they wouldnt have looked good, i would have just went with fake.

I agree, it does look basically identical!  I'm DIY'ing pretty much nothing...maybe favors...but flowers I am DEFINITELY doing on my own.  They are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive when you buy made-up bouquets for any occasion, so I don't even want to know how much it'd be when I tell them it's for a wedding.  I will be marching to the flower market the day of and making my own for a tiny fraction of the cost--otherwise I might not be able to afford what I really want!

Great job! In our area they have several flower markets/produce places that sell 2 dozen roses for $7.00. I did some too,but in the end decided to order them from Sam's club, believe it or not. We got a white wedding package of 17 pieces for $300. which was a bridal bouquet plus toss-away, 4 BM bouquets,6 bouts,4 corsages, box of petals and floral food with clippers. They were delivered 2 days before with instructions to trim the stems, place in the water with food and allow to rehydrate for up to 8 hours. In 3 hours they were gorgeous, and to control them opening too much they needed to be kept in a cool room out of direct sunlight or refrigerated.

We only needed 2 BM bouquets,so the other 2 I took apart and made 2 memorial bouquets and put the rest in tall vases to use on the FP mantel during the reception. The toss-away was used on the placecard table in a large vase and filled with babies breath. A corsage I took apart and made another bout in a minute or less too. Handles came wrapped in ivory satin ribbon,so we kept the BM that way and I re-covered the brides in a blue taffeta and added crystals on stems throughout.

I agree it is easy, but a few days before is crunch time, and there's a million little things to finish up,so it saved me a ton of time by having them premade. These were also less than half the cost of our floral quote for half the amount of flowers,so it pays to shop around. There's a ton of floral warehouses you can use for bulk orders, but the hydrangeas we wanted jumped in price tremendously when we went to order. I'm glad I read a lot of online reviews as well.

Good luck with your new venture!

i had the same experience trying to buy black mini calla lilies, i go online and see them for around $3 per flower on fiftyflowers.com, and then call up my local florist and they wanted $13 PER FLOWER.  Seriously, I respect that there are talented florists out there and you are paying for their skills, but that is just robbery.

Good for you, that bouquet looked better than a lot I've seen from professionals!

It looks the same, but do you really want to spend the day(s) just before your wedding creating flower arrangements?  The extra money would be worth the stress relief, IMHO.

to me the money saved is worth the hour or two it will take me to make them. I only have 4 bridesmaids. So to make 4 boutenierres it will take me about 30 minutes. and to make 4 bouquets will take me about an hour. NO WAY would i pay 600 for an hour and half of someones time. NOT HAPPENING...
