I did my own flowers, and I highly recommend it! It was one of the easiest DIY projects I ever tackled (and I have zero floral arranging experience), and I saved a ton of money (in total, all of my flowers cost $300, and I had a lot of flowers). I went to the SF flower mart, which is how I got such a great deal on so many flowers, and they were incredibly fresh and held up beautifully. I know Mrs. Balloon's purchased her flowers online and had a great experience (her blog post about her DIY flowers is here). The biggest thing is to make sure you set aside enough time the day before to arrange everything, and keep everything in water so it stays fresh.
But I seriously cannot recommend DIY flowers enough! It was so much fun to tackle that project, I got exactly what I wanted, and I didn't have to shell out a small fortune. Let me know if you have any questions!
You can totally DIY your theme of flowers!! Just give yourself ample time and you can save hundreds!
I went with a florist BUT i did go down to the flower district in LA before. Unfortunately they coudn't do what I wanted but they are very good! My friend went to the LA district THE DAY of her wedding because her bouquet from her florist was too much for her. She got there at 7am when they opened and got a bouquet of 36 red roses with crystal rhinestones on each stem for $70. Amazing! You should go down there and talk to some vendors!
I, with help did my flowers for our wedding and am glad I did. I got exactly what I wanted and for much less. Depending on how many flowers you need to do (arrangements, bouquets, boutonnieres, etc) I do suggest that you ask for help. I asked my BM, MOH and family members help and even if they didn't have any experience they helped prepping.
What kinds of flowers are you thinking of? Is there a flower mart or farmers market close to you? I've heard good things about ordering from fiftyflowers.com.

I was all for DIY yourself flowers but once making a friend who was a florist and got a good deal I did that instead ( but am making my own bouts) and I am happy that I get to relax before the wedding. We've done it for my friends and they turn out great, very affordable but there is a lot of work that needs to be done the day before. They were up till 2 am and up at 6 to start getting ready. Just be prepared!
