I am getting married in Soiuth Lake Tahoe (and a local to boot!). I am having Thran's do all my flowers, and I couldn't be happier with their service. I also know the shop owner/manager, Katie, and she is totally willing to work with you on a price. I think all the flowers for the ceremony, reception, and personal flowers came to a total of $1500. We said it was too much, so Katie waved the transportation fees and tax, which took off $500!
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the other two, but my experience with Thran's has been awesome.
My sister got married in Tahoe last year....... if you need more suggestions I could ask her- let me know!
I'm going with A Rose is a Rose. So far, Julie has been a pleasure to work with and her quotes were very reasonable! She is located in Tahoe City. I've also heard good things about Thran's. Good luck!
We're going with Thran's. I didn't meet Katie, I met with Barbara who was wonderful. She didn't waive any of the fees for me though...must be a locals only deal.
You might just have to ask for some discounts. I know we got more off because we know Katie personally, but I've heard from other people that have gotten discounts from Thran's, too. Whoever you go with, you should always ask if they have any discounts or specials or flowers substitutions that will lower your price. The worst they can say is no, right? ![]()
You girls! I can't believe there are Tahoe girls here and we're not talking and filling up the Tahoe board.
I have a meeting with A Bud and Beyond tomorrow. I'll be sure to talk to Katie as well and look into A Rose is a Rose.
So now you know I have to ask, where are you all getting married? And are you all local or destination? We're sort of both, with strong Truckee ties... so we've been getting the "bro deals" so far ;)
I am a South Lake Tahoe local (only since last July), and I'm getting married here too! We'll have our ceremony at St.Theresa's and then have the reception at Valhalla (here's the website: www.valhallatahoe.com). Where is everyone else?
I'm excited to see so many Tahoe brides, as well! I was on the Knot for a little while before this, but there weren't many Tahoe brides there either.
We looked at Valhalla (well, we looked everywhere), but ended up at Shinneyboo Cabin Creek resort. I had originally envisioned an estate wedding at Carousel House, Fitzhaven or Thunderbird Lodge... but that was not in the cards for us.
We wanted our wedding to be a weekend wedding for those people who were coming from out of town, and we wanted our reception and ceremony at the same venue... but I love Valhalla!
In the end, we had the hook up because of a family contact with Shinneyboo.

Who is doing your catering? We went sort of non-traditional, and got Butcher Boy from Reno to do it. It'll be a little more casual than we originally imagined but the price was right!
Wow, that looks beautiful! You're having everything outside then, right? I would have loved to have an reception outside and really soak up the beauty of Tahoe, but with our date, we didn't want to take any chances on the weather. And we got a discount at Valhalla because we know the lady who schedules events out there. ![]()
Our caterer is Jill from Two Sisters Catering in South Lake. We were originally working with Elegant Affair down in Zephyr Cove, but he was super flaky about returning our calls and emails. My fiance got fed up, so I told him if he did all the work, we could switch caterers. Jill has been super to work with, though, and I'm really glad we're with her now.
I think catering from the Butcher Boy is an awesome idea! What kind of dinner are you having (sit down, barbecue, buffet)? We're having a plated dinner. The first course is either soup or salad and the second course is either roasted pheasant with pancetta and carmelized, rack of lamb with mashed sweet potatoes and raisin au jus, or (vegetarian) stuffed portabello mushroom.
Oh Mrs. Spring, your menu sounds divine! Lamb has to be one of my favorites in the world.
We had a really hard time with catering, because Moody's and Mountain Magic are the two biggies in North Lake, but we just weren't getting the deals we wanted. But, fiance ate at Butcher Boy often during college, and he ended up working out a sweet deal with their staff. They are bringing in everything we need for a very reasonable price, since our site has *nothing*. They are also going to cook on site for us!
We're doing sit-down, plated food... Let's see if I can remember the menu...
Ceaser salad, then Marinated tri-tip or chicken with fingerling potatoes and grilled summer vegetables, with butternut squash ravioli for the many vegetarians. I'm excited about our appetizers too (fruit and cheese, satay, and homemade chip bar). They should be great! Though our menu isn't fancy, Butcher Boy food is rock-solidly delicious...
And yeah, I'm a little nervous about doing everything outside, but the weather should be pretty predictable in July. We'll have heat lamps, just in case. I think it is a good call to be doing it inside in May!
Now, who is your photographer? I'm crazy for mine (Annie X).
Can I just say first off, that it's really nice to be able to chat with another Tahoe bride? I don't know anyone up here who is getting married this summer, only people who have gotten married in the last few years. I'm glad we found each other, doctorgirl!
I think your menu sounds great! And I have only had great experiences with Butcher Boy. I always go in there when I'm in Reno for their chorizo (it's the best in the world!).
Our photographer is Zinser (www.zinserphoto.com); he's actually based out of Reno. We won a free engagement session with him at a bridal fair, and we loved him so much we booked him for the wedding, too. I hadn't heard of Annie X, but her website is beautiful. Your photos are going to be gorgeous!
Who's doing your cake? And what does it look like? Ours is by Flour Gril Wedding Cakes. It's a square, three tier white cake with a brown ribbon on each tier and blue hydrangeas in between. Kinda like this:
That cake looks beautiful!
We're not doing a cake... Well, that's not entirely true, we're having a small cutting cake. My sister (The Cupcake Princess) is doing cupcakes for us. The only pictures I have of her work are i-phone pictures, and they surely don't do her justice! She's really into it, so I'm excited to see how they come out.
I just talked to Amy at Thran's. We'll see what happens with that...
It is so great to have a Tahoe connection! OK, one more question... hair and makeup. I'm having a serious dilemma with this issue as we have a "friendor" that I'm not actually sure I'm comfortable using. I toyed with the idea of flying my stylist down, but that seems really ridiculous!
Mmmmmm, cupcakes.
And good luck with Thran's. I hope they work out for you.
I am getting my hair and makeup done by Marianna Lucido. She is located on Kingsbury Grade (over by the casinos at Stateline), but I think she travels around the lake at no extra cost. I chose her because she has a ton of experience (www.tahoeweddinghair.com) and her rates seem reasonable. I wanted a stylist who could do my hair and makeup, plus hair and makeup for my sisters (I'm not having a bridal party but all my sisters are going to the salon with me).
I think this is one area where I really wanted to be sure I was hiring a professional. It wasn't an option for me to have a relative or friend do my hair and makeup because I want to look perfect that day. I'm not confident a non-professional could do that for me. I think flying your stylist down is a great idea! Maybe to offset the costs, you could schedule more than just your hair for the day (maybe bridesmaids, mothers, etc... would like to join in too). That way she might waive or reduce your costs if she is getting paid for other appointments that same day.
Otherwise, I might recommend looking around Tahoe for a stylist who will come to your site. There are a ton of really talented stylists in every price range around just because so many people get married up here. I have heard good things about Weddings A Go-Go, so that might be somewhere to start. Or try one of the casinos/resorts/spas. They always have a huge staff of people specifically gearded toward the wedding industry.
Yay Tahoe brides!
We're having the ceremony at St. Theresa's and reception at Edgewood. Aimee (who also works at Thrans) is our wedding planner. We're from the Bay but our families vacation in Tahoe a lot and FI's family has a home there. FI and I live in LA currently so it's been a little difficult which is why we hire Aimee. We've only been up there twice in the 2 years we've been engaged :(
We're using Katie's Cakes for our cake. I had a hair trial at Lulu's in Harrah's but they would have been really expensive for my BMs and we would have had to go to the salon. I hired Nina Barbosa, shes a freelancer for Mac from the Sac area and she'll travel with a team if necessary for Tahoe for $100 + cost of HMU. I have a bio with all my stuff on the knot, I'll try to link it to my name here.
See, that's the tricky part... The "friendor" is a local (Tahoe City) stylist. I'm scared that by dissing her and getting someone local that I'll hurt her feelings, and I don't want to do that.
But she did say to me, "I don't do up-dos, the retro wave that you want is not going to work and it's going to take too long" and last but not least she said, "I hated my wedding hair and I'm going to do yours better than what I had". Yikes!
So I feel like hiring anyone in Tahoe will hurt her, but I want to be really confident in my look at the same time. I keep thinking this problem will just go away, but it's not going anywhere.
Oh, and today I met with another local florist who I really liked as well, so I'm throwing her hat into the ring too. Her name is Martha Bernyk.
Keep me updated!
I felt a little bad at first when we decided to go with a non-local photographer. And honestly, sometimes I feel a tinsy bit of pressure from my planner to use local vendors. But, I'm firmly going with the best deal I can get. Besides, Edgewood, Thran's and our planner are all local and getting a good chunk of my money!
Dr.girl - I would hire someone else. I don't how close the "friendor" is to you but that's not ok for her to tell you the style you want isn't going to work. What does that even mean? She can't do it?
Nina does a lot of weddings in Tahoe and she's been really great. Do you want her contact info? She was recommended to me by another Tahoe bride that got married in the fall.
Yeah, that sounds really bizarre and totally unprofessional. I would have just as much of a problem hiring her after comments like that. Is the stylist friend invited to the wedding? Maybe you could tell her you just want to enjoy the day as a guest instead of having to work while everyone else is partying. This has worked for me on numerous occasions, like when my father-in-law wanted to cater the reception or when my mom wanted to do my hair for the wedding herself. If she's not invited to the wedding, maybe you can ask her do your hair for the rehearsal dinner or something? I think a distraction is in order so she isn't hurt by you going to someone else.
P.S. Yay for Tahoe brides!
@Tahoebound- thanks for all the info! I'd love her contact info.
I talked to Aimee today and she sounded really nice (and very competent). You are in good hands. And Edgewood is great!
Who did you end up going with for photography? Someone from LA? We thought about bringing someone in, but I love Annie as much as anyone anywhere else in the country!
It's hard planning from a distance, isn't it? Aimee was like, "Why don't you come in and we can discuss..." Well, I'm actually in Seattle, so that's not going to work so well!
So great having a Tahoe contingent on the boards!
Ohhhhh I am sooo jealous of all of you getting married at Tahoe!!! Rock on ladies!! I went on a snowboarding trip there once & loved it!
Doctorgirl - your venue is OHMIGOSH amazing!!!!! WOW!!!!
Hey, tahoebound, we're having our wedding at the same place. Awesome! Are you using one of the priests at St. Theresa's? Or are you bringing someone with you? Also, Edgewood is gorgeous; great choice!
We found our florist! We got bids from Thran's, A Bud and Beyond, and a few other places.
Interestingly, I had some less than stellar experiences talking to some of these florists. I know these folks are busy, but there was only one person who made the effort to understand our vision, asked what our colors were, and made suggestions for alternative flowers that would make our wedding just as beautiful, while more inexpensive. She also came in at less than 1/3rd of the price of other florists-- Martha Bernyk.
I've seen her portfolio, and it's gorgeous. Plus she made the effort to check out the area where we're getting married before she even sent me the bid to make sure that we were headed in the right direction! She also was the only florist to welcome flowers from my killer garden in Seattle. (We've got peonies in July here!) I'm totally happy.
Congrats, doctorgirl! That's great! I haven't heard of Martha Bernyk, but it sounds like you made a great choice finding someone who fits your price range and someone you feel comfortable with. Plus, there's one more thing crossed off your to-do list!
You Ladies are cracking me up with your back and forth! It's such a help! I have already visited those sites you suggest in your comments. Thank you for all your help! One more vendor to look at and call!
Just a little more info for you all on me:
I am getting married at Paradise Park in Meyers, just 15 or so minutes south of Stateline under a 1000 year old tree. Once we found the place, things just seemed to unveil themselves to us and began to fit into the larger puzzle we've created!
Because of the place, we tied all our elements into a single theme, "Family Tree." From there I created a monogram that included the exact tree we'd be wed under. That monogram, I made into a rubber stamp and well I've reserved myself to not stamp everything in sight!
The family tree theme has actually made my job easier! I've found tree this and tree that and all the small DIY projects I wanted to incorporate were just not that important if they didn't involve something "family tree!" So making decisions have been easier but I do get carried away with all the things I want to do for others. My fi has been frustrated sometimes with all the things I want to spend money on, so I have to remind him, "I haven't spent the money, I just like the idea."
My dad lives in Gardnerville, Nevada and that's where I grew up so it's been a fun event involving him and he's so great when it comes to recon missions! He's so honest, maybe too honest! He found our caterer, a local couple that own a restaurant/bakery in Gardnerville, Russell Mercantile. They don't have a website, but I based our decision on word of mouth and the fact that my dad had been to two weddings that they catered. The great thing about them, is that they are including the cake (actually cupcakes) in the price!!!
My fi and I wanted to make it more of a vacation for our guests so we included a vacation home in our budget for the weekend, 4 days! We invited our bridal party to stay there with us to ease the burden of cost for them. The vacation home is in between Meyers and Stateline.
I have a good friend, (we are in each other's weddings this year) that has also helped emensely with vendors. She is doing a backyard wedding in Minden, Nevada. She'll be using a local photographer from the Record Currier to do her wedding photography! She found her for a steal along with flowers! Douglas High School has a couple agriculture classes including flower, mainly wedding flower arrangements! So you essentially purchase the flowers at cost and donate money to your student that is doing your wedding. The student is being coached by a teacher who has over 25 years experience arranging flowers! Some local vendors you would have never known about unless you had close ties to the place! So I am actually meeting with both of them when I am in town for her wedding!
So, I will include more as plans develop!
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions!
Doctorgirl - I messaged you Nina's contact info. I hope she can help you out - but don't worry about if it doesn't work out ;)
I'm so glad you like Aimee, she has been great.
Mrs. Spring - How is St. Theresa's going for you? I'm planning the ceremony right now and I don't really feel like I've gotten a ton of info from them. The priest that married FI's parents is actually an old family friend and he will be marrying us. We hired Avalance Violin and Guitar Duo for the ceremony music so that's what I'm working putting together. What are you planning?
Oh and yes, we did hire and LA photographer. The ones Aimee recommended in Tahoe, that we really loved were way out of our budget. We hired pixoflife out of LA and they are giving us a great package with travel. And their really excited about shooting in Tahoe.
This is so great to see Tahoe brides!
Hey, tahoebound, I don't feel like I have gotten a lot of direction from St. Theresa's either, but I'm not sure if it's just the Lake atmosphere taking over. You know how flaky people up here can be. :) We met with Monsignor, and he basically just gave us a book and told us to come back when we had our witness papers signed. Luckily, we already completed the pre-cana classes. But I haven't been to a wedding in years, and my FI has never been to one, so I'm feeling a little nervous about how it is all going to go. I don't want to be up the night before my wedding printing out programs!
I'll keep you updated on my progress with them, and you do the same for me, ok?
Hi Ladies! Looks like I'm a little behind in this thread but I just found it and I'm also a Tahoe Bride. I'm getting married on August 8 at the top of Squaw Valley. I'm wodering if you have any suggestions for a good band or DJ that you're using? I have some DJ in mind on the back burner but haven't really found what I'm looking for. I'd love to find a good basic rock band that can play 60s-90s music. And ideally have a DJ when they go on break.
I know I'm really pushing it because my date is in 2 months! Any suggestions you might have would be great!

Welcome Tahoebride! Nice to meet you.
We're doing an ipod wedding, so I don't have a great band suggestion off the top of my head... I know that Notorious is a cover band that has done some weddings at Squaw, though they are from the Bay. I hear they are fun. I'll keep looking!
I could pm you the contact info for the dj I used, Donna Baxter. She is a local radio dj up here, and did a great job of playing a good mix of music AND staying on our timeline. I think she normally charges $1000 for an event, but she worked with us quite a bit to bring down her price to what we could afford. Also, Notorious is great; they play up here often.
Other than that, I recommend checking out www.tahoeweddings.org. It is a site run by the Lake Tahoe Wedding Association, and every single vendor I have worked with through them has been awesome and talented. Good luck, and welcome to the Tahoe board!
Thanks so much! Notorious is a great suggestion, I've actually contacted them but unfortunately they are already booked (for a wedding!). Their manager suggested other bands but they were all in the $6-8K band which is more than I'd like to pay. I was hoping to find a local band that is maybe less well known and would charge less - surprisingly hard to find!
Mrs. Spring - I'd love to have Donna Baxter's info, thanks!
Doctorgirl - I don't know if you've picked your florist but I'm using Julie from A Rose is a Rose and she has been really great! Some people asked about other vendors, so here goes: for photography I'm using Gina Munda. I LOVE her photography. I am going with Moody's for catering.
I wish I had found this when I first started looking at vendors!
Tahoebride- Would you be willing to re-post your vendor list on the Tahoe vendor thread. The community would be forever grateful!
I ended up with Martha Bernyk for florals. I've been thrilled working with her so far!

On the off chance that there are other Tahoe brides around these days, does anyone recommend their florist?
I'm looking at A Bud and Beyond and Thrans, but haven't settled on anyone yet. If you have a recommendation, I'm all ears!
