My FH and I went to Walgreens this morning and got our flu shots. We both are managers and deal with LOTS of people EVERY day and plus being a Doctors daughter I always am reminded about these things.
So I got to thinking and thought I'd make a poll...
My hubby and I will also be getting the flu shots. I'm mostly getting it because I am around folks who are always sick because their kids get sick at school. Since I have been sick way to often this year, I like to be protected.
I've never had one. That's not to say I wouldn't but honestly I just haven't thought about it.
i'm getting it because my company provides them, the people come to my office and administer them, no doctor's appt necessary :)
Never got one before but they're free at my new job! FI has to get one every year because he is a teacher.
I had them every year as a child, but when I was 14 I got my last flu shot. That year after getting the shot I had the WORST flu of my life. I was sick for 24 hours and I was violently ill 15+ times. lol sorry thats gross.
I lost my faith in the flu shot after than. I believe that it is essential for people with poor health, children & seniors... but until I am either in poor health or aging I won't get another one. :)
I'm almost 7 months pregnant, so even though I get the seasonal flu vaccine every year, it was pareticularly important that I get it this year.
I'm on the list for the H1N1 when it becomes available!
I work in a hospital so I have to. Either that, or wear a mask all day. Maybe the mask wouldn't be such a big deal if I didn't work in marketing! LOL
I figure since I'm young and healthy I will just play it safe (wash hands, cough into sleeve, etc.). If I was in a high-risk category I might think about it.
I work in a health care facility surrounded by people, many of whom I am in close contact with....I don't have time to get sick so I got my shot yesterday!
I never get it. I'm young and healthy and I don't work around children or even a lot of people (I work at home mostly and when I'm in "the office" ther are only 1-3 other people there ever).
Recessionista Bride...the same thing happened to my brother....the one year he took the shot was the year that he actually got the flu...im not saying that it gives you the flu...it doesnt...but clearly it does not prevent all flus. What they do is they literally just guess which flu strains will be the most common and those are the ones that go into the shot. So unless i know 100% that im going to be protected i dont take that shot....the number one reason? I dont like shots!!! i work in the healthcare field and there are nurses literally running around asking people if they want the flu shot and it freaks me out! get away from me with that thing! haha. They are also trying to make the swine flu shot mandatory...even though they still have no idea what dosage to give us...So no...i will not be taking the shot and have never had the flu.
I usually get 'em through work either free or at a discount. I plan to do 'em again this year. :-)
I am generally supportive of vaccines, but the flu shot is one vaccine I refuse to get now that I'm an adult. I used to always get the flu vaccine because I had severe asthma as a kid, but I always had bad reactions (flu-like symptoms for a couple days after receiving the shot). It's not worth it for me to be protected against one strain of the flu, when I have to suffer from a flu-like reaction just from receiving the shot.
My husband doesn't get it because the flu vaccine only protects against one strain of the flu virus, and he doesn't feel like it's worth it to get a vaccine that could not work anyway. Plus, he isn't really high-exposure.
Got one last year and getting one again this year bc my company provides it.
My dad is a doctor. Every fall, there will be a day when I go home to my parents and open up the fridge and there is a syringe and a vial staring me in the face. This year he got my reluctant fiance, too.
This year there are 2 flu vaccines. The seasonal flu vaccine contains several strains. Here is an outtake from the FDA website for this year's seasonal flu vaccine:
"The vaccine for the 2009-2010 seasonal influenza contains:
There is always a possibility of a less than optimal match between the virus strains predicted to circulate and the virus strains that end up causing the most illness. Even if the vaccine and the circulating strains are not an exact match, the vaccine may reduce the severity of the illness or may help prevent influenza-related complications."
The second vaccine is to the H1N1 pandemic strain. I plan to get them both, as I am exposed to lots of sick kids on a daily basis.
I never get one. I'm not exposed to people on a regular basis (ok i work in a cube and we all stay home when we're sick!) and i sanitize my house. It's not required by work. Plus, who knows what strain I'll end up getting if I do get sick? I live life on the edge, can you tell? =] I never seem to get more than a 24 hour flu bug anyways and I bounce back pretty quick
Getting mine this week at work. It's the first time I've had one. I probably wouldn't do it if they didn't offer them here.
I have never got one except with the wedding coming up, I am trying to avoid it if possible, so I got one this year.
In regards to the H1N1, I would strongly advise against getting that shot. My mom is a nurse and she went to a meeting, basically a room full of nurses, where the head nurse asked how many people were going to get that one. Not a single person said they would. There has been no testing, it's been rushed through, no one knows just how safe it actually is. I would really consider doing your homework if you are thinking about getting that one.
Britshining- I'm sorry but there is testing for the H1N1 vaccine. I think it is crucial to be informed as to the reality of the situation and not spread misinformation. In this case misinformation could lead to the death of a child or pregnant woman, perhaps.
This vaccine has been tested. Some of the testing has happened right here in the Seattle area! Preliminary results are available:
Early results suggest 1 dose of H1N1 vaccine may be protective

Sep 10, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – Preliminary clinical trial results suggest that pandemic H1N1 vaccines made by Novartis and CSL Ltd. will provide protection in adults with just one dose, raising hope for a less difficult immunization program than has been anticipated.
Preliminary results for the two vaccines were published online this afternoon by the New England Journal of Medicine. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has ordered supplies of both vaccines, along with doses from three other companies.
Federal officials have said they expected that a two-dose regimen of the H1N1 vaccines would probably be necessary to generate an adequate immune response to the novel virus. The first doses are expected to become available in mid October.
In an editorial accompanying the vaccine reports, infectious disease expert Kathleen M. Neuzil, MD, MPH, called the findings welcome and reassuring.
She noted that a one-dose schedule doubles the number of people who can be protected with a given amount of vaccine, and it also means that vaccinees are protected sooner, since a two-dose regimen typically involves doses spaced 3 weeks or more apart.

From the CDC website:
Will this vaccine be made differently than the seasonal influenza vaccine?
No. This vaccine will be made using the same processes and facilities that are used to make the currently licensed seasonal influenza vaccines.

I have never gotten the shot and when I get sick, or my daughter does, we stay home and clean like there is no tomorrow. We have been very lucky that we are able to kill anything if we just catch it right when it starts.
I may change my mind once we have another kid, but for now, we, too, live life on the edge.
I got the regular flu shot because I have an immune system disorder and so it totally fails. However, the lovely flu shot that I got gave me some pretty bad symptoms for 4 days or so. My torso was SO itchy and broke out into hives, I had a mild fever, congestion, and generally felt like crap.
Hopefully it'll help in the long run though.
I am a nurse, and I work with infants, so I get mine every year.
I am also a high-risk health group as I lost a chunk of one of my lungs due to a tumour in my thoracic cavity.
Every nurse I work with is planning to get the flu vaccines (both the seasonal and H1N1) this year. I have seen 2 babies become brain damaged due to their mothers contracting H1N1, and one of these mom's die from H1N1 ... it isn't worth messing around with.
I never get a flu shot and so far I have never had the flu ::knock on wood::
As for the H1N1 flu shot, I have read what is in it and I am not comfortable having it injected into my body. No one knows what the long term effects of this vaccine are, and that is not a risk I am willing to take.
The long term effects are the same as the regular flu vaccine mncrk... This is the same formulation as regular flu. It's just that there are two different proteins that it is protecting against.
H stands for hemagglutanin and N stands for neurominadase. These are proteins found on the surface of the flu virus. Each year the flu mutates and changes the proteins on it's surface (to evade our clever immune systems)... so each year new proteins are included in the vaccine to reflect the circulating strains.
The H1N1 vaccine is no different than any other flu vaccine. In fact, it would have been included in the regular seasonal vaccine, but it was discovered too late in the season last year for inclusion in the vaccine. I've never had one before, but I'm getting a flu shot this year. I don't have time to be sick!
I've never gotten the flu shot ... and I've only had the flu (if that's even what it was) once in my life. I don't really get sick ever ... it would be my luck that I get this shot and I become ill.
Hmm... Mrs. DG, is it not true that this vaccine contains mercury and squalene. I personally am not comfortable having something that has been link to Gulf War Syndrome shot into me. Maybe I have been misinformed but I don't want either of these things in my body if I can help it.
I've only gotten it once before - when I was in Army bootcamp, they MAKE you - and I was SO sick that year. I can't decide if I will get one this year or not. They offer them free here at work, so maybe I should just to be safe, but I don't know.
I'm still thinking about it. Thanks for the thread. It is good to read what people are thinking.
I generally don't get one, but I might this year, as I'm very involved with my church, working with children, the elderly, and chronically ill people.
mncrk- good question. The amount of thimerosol in the flu vaccine is less than that in a single can of tuna (3 oz). In the single dose vial it is thimerasol free.
Here is a good link:

Regarding seasonal flu vaccine, it is considered adjuvant free:
All seasonal influenza vaccines licensed in the United States are produced in eggs and they do not contain adjuvants.
Link: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/safety_planning.htm
and regarding H1N1
Both live, attenuated and inactivated influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine formulations will be available initially; as with seasonal influenza vaccines, neither of these vaccines will contain adjuvants.

Sorry to link you to technical papers, but that's where the reliable information is!
im totally against the flu shot - never had it and hope i never will! my office sponsors flu shots for staff for the past 2 years and for the past 2 years we have had the highest sickleave/flu ever - i do payroll so i notice these things
but i can understand health care professional or teachers having it, i have no issue if i get the flu, i have about 60 days of unused sickleave so im happy to stay home and let nature take its course
I've been getting my flu shot for the past couple of years. I definitely plan to get both the season flu and H1N1 vaccine. We're very lucky these vaccines are free for everyone in the province so cost has never been an issue.
Oddly enough I remember catching the flu the first winter I did get the flu vaccine. It just meant I got to stay home and watch the Olympics on the tele.
In my research, the only articles that I could come up with that alledged that there would be squalene were on anti-vaccine websites. CDC says no adjuvants.
I'm glad you linked all this info, DG! It probably won't make me get the vaccine (since I abstain because of bad reactions) but I think you've just changed my husband's mind. Anyway, I sent him the link to this post, and now he's signed up for our office flu shot. Good work!
@joceylyn I am the exact same way! My Dr Dad always had them in the fridge ;) hahaha
this year I lived far away though...
