I've been debating this.. some say get it, some say don't because it's a live virus. The FluMist is new and not much is known about it. I also heard that the "swine flu" already mutated so it's like getting a vaccine for a cold. On the other hand "swine flu" could potentially kill you, some get pneumonia as a complication... and it goes on...

There are the two different kinds of vaccines..

    1. FluMist which goes up your nose and it's a "live virus"

    2. Vaccine which is just a shot with the antibodies.

    What are your thoughts?

My FI got it...I was a little weary - but he's fine, so I suppose it's a good idea.

Yeah, not sniffing the piggy flu up my nose. NO WAY NO HOW!

D works overnight in the hospital and isn't getting ANYTHING to ward off the flu except exercise, vitamins, and a lil lovin' from me!

Just want to point out that this is true for -any- strain of the flu.  Also, even if the swine flu already mutated, getting the swine flu vaccine can still help your body defend against the new mutations(just as with the normal flu, if you get a strain different from the one you're vaccinated for, it will likely be weaker than it would have without the vaccine).

I'm getting the shot but it has nothing to do with my feelings on the efficacy of the FluMist, I have chronic health problems so I'm ineligable for the mist.  I hate shots though so I'd get the mist if I could >_<.

The shot is actually better at building up immunity for adults and the FluMist is better at building up immunity for kids (I know this is definitely true for the seasonal flu vaccine, but they may have to do more research on the H1N1).  Because the FluMist is a live vaccine, you can develop the flu from it.  Also, I've hard that the FluMist can go down the back of your throat and one can taste it, so that's not very pleasant.  Personally, I'm not going to get the H1N1 because I feel like they haven't done enough testing and it was very rushed in order to bring it out to the public in time for the flu season.  Also, the vaccine was only tested in certain age groups, with the oldest being up to 26 years of age.  I believe I'll wait til next year when more post-marketing research has been conducted.

I never get the flu shot, but this year I decided to get the seasonal shot. Like cincin, I'm skeptical about the H1N1 vaccine. I also feel like the more vaccines we come out with & inject ourselves with, the more powerful these viruses are going to get. We already have superbugs like MRSA & now H1N1... I'm cautious as to what I put in my body. :)

People are very nervous about H1N1 because its been so widely reported in the media. However what isn't reported is that the common flu we've all dealt w/ kills a large number of people each year too!

According to the CDC, seasonal influenza (and related complications) kills an average of 36 000 Americans a year.

What I'm scared of is all the Tamiflu that is being prescribed because everyone thinks they have the flu!  Honestly, it's because of over-prescribing that allows the virus to become resistant and more powerful.

I just want to point out that even though the FluMist is a live vaccine, you can NOT develop the flu from it.  The virus in the mist has been manipulated so it is unable to infect you.  You may still have the effects of an immune response such as a headache, aches, slight fever, but this is NOT the flu.

The H1N1 vaccine administration is followed closly by the CDC and they have yet to see any issues even with the 'lack' of testing.  It is important to point out that the seasonal vaccine changes yearly, so this is not that much different then getting a seasonal vaccine.  Influenza viruses have markers (hence the H and N in the name) and the vaccine is changed to target different 'numbers' on the markers.  We did not create a brand new vaccine, we just motified the seasonal a bit.

If you are a high-risk, I would not pass on the vaccine if it is available.  Not only will it protect you for the winter and spring, it will help you if there is another outbreak in the future.

And yes, I have recieved my vaccine (I work in the ER and on the ICU with the patients who have H1N1)

I never get a regular flu shot due to how my body negatively reacts to them and I've never gotten sick at all since not getting them. So getting the Swine flu vaccine is not something I considered for that reason. Also, I've talked to several people in the medical field who have actually said (what most doctors will not tell you) that the government recently announced that it has signed away all liability for the Swine flu vaccination so that if you get sick from it, they refuse to be held responsible if you try to sue them, etc, and for that reason will not get any themselves. That's scared away quite a few people I know from it and I honestly can't say that I blame them. Everyone has a different reaction to flu vaccines and if you know how your body works and what doesn't work for it, then it's better to trust and follow that than to obey what someone else says who doesn't know anything at all about your body.

I probably will once it is more readily available for lower risk groups.  I would prefer the nasal mist since I usually react badly to the flu injections- I got the regular flu mist a couple of months ago and instead of feeling crappy for 2-3 days, I took an hour nap and felt totally normal.

I don't think it matters what type of vaccine you get; they are both vaccines.

I had swine flu, and it is worth getting vaccinated against, let me tell you.

I had to take the injection because I'm immunocompromised, but otherwise would have been happy to take a live virus vaccine... I just wanted to be protected (which I finally am!)
