The owner of my venue called today. We have had so many problems with him.
In late July I confirmed our dates with the owner and sent him the deposit check as he asked me to do so – he didn’t ask me to send anything else. Well a few weeks later we get a letter (the guy is old, he doesn’t have an email address or anything) asking what the check was for and what were the dates (you get the venue for the whole week to set up, it’s a really rustic barn). So I called him and told him that info. He said he would cash the check…well then he calls me a little over a week ago and asked if we were still interested. I was like um yes that’s why we sent you the check. He said he didn’t know what I was talking about and he must have lost it, could we send another one and send a letter with the dates that we were reserving the venue for. I was a little annoyed but I was set on the venue so of course I was like yes. He starts telling me he has other interested people and I told him to please hold it for us, the replacement check would go out that day. I had already ordered our save the dates, told our vendors etc. He told me that it was reserved for us and he would look for the check.
That was about a week ago. I tried calling him to make sure he got it, but he didn’t answer.
Then he calls me today asking me if my reservation is under a different name. I tell him no…it would be under mine or my fiances. Well then he tells me he must have double booked us. And that he never cashed our check.
Cue bridal meltdown. I ask him how this could happen, he told me we had the date! I’ve been talking to him for months! He is the one who lost our original check and then we had to send him a replacement. As of a week ago he said OUR NAMES were on the reservation.
He doesn’t remember the lost check, but he said he will try to fix it. I’m legitimately worried that he is going senile.
Now I’m freaking out because it’s 8 months to go and we don’t have a venue. We already sent our save the dates too, because I thought we were all good.
Even if he can somehow fix it, not even sure I want to trust the location of my wedding with this flaky person now. What would we do if a week before our wedding we can’t get in touch with him to get the keys?
Plus he raised the rate on us too! And every time I’ve talked to him he has told me it is a different price to rent the space.
Normally I’m the type of person to always get everything in writing and all this verbal contract shit really made me uncomfortable. But I’ve known other people who have rented the space. So I figured if it worked for them, it would be ok for us.
Maybe finding someone else will work out for the better…Bees wish me luck on my new venue hunt!
