I used my x’s last name – that’s my legal name and that is what everyone knows me by, not my maiden name.  I was previously married for 10 years.   I never requested my maiden name back when going through the divorce because of my children….and honestly, that wasn’t even on my mind at the time.

I used my ex-husband’s last name almost 23 years after we divorced.  I was advised to keep it the same as my son’s to keep school stuff straight.  I didn’t particularly like it, but it was, like rickhurst35, what everybody knew as my last name.

It’s my guess that guests of your wedding know either you or your husband (to-be).  If someone wants to gift you with money, I would think they would make the check out to whomever they know (you or the groom).

I was an encore bride who kept my ex’s name after 10 years of marraige because of my daughter. When I got remarried we only used our first names on our invitations- they were obviously not super formal.  As for the argument that someone may not know who to make the check to…. If they can’t figure out either one of our last names-then that person is not close enough to me to invite to my wedding.

I am an encore bride and have a similar question. When applying for marriage license, do I use maiden name or ex’s last name which I currently go by?
