interesting … there was a Carnival cruise ship “parked” off the beaches of Cabo for a few days while I was there this past week. Scary!

When we arrived in Mexico on Sunday, Feb 19th, you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting a member of the Mexican military and their machine gun. On nearly every corner there was a humvee parked with a large gun and someone manning it up top.

HOWEVER… when we left yesterday, we didn’t see a single police officer or soldier. It was strange.

That is very concerning. Even the toursit cities are seeing problems now.

@Bichon Frise:  I totally agree, alot of this is going on everywhere nowadays. I’ve had friends that have been in Mexico and even traveled South America and luckily they have made it through pretty fine. Me myself have always been lucky too.

Things like this (EDIT: Being mugged at gunpoint), and other unfortunate events can literally happen anywhere. Happened to me several times, and once one junkie with a dirty needle.

@Elolith:  Exactly.  This isn’t specific to Mexico.  This happens in every country.  There was nothing they could do to avoid it.  In other situations you should be hyper-aware of your surroundings and where your personal items are.  Pickpocketers are very slick.

@JuniperSage:  It was parked because CCL has severely cut back on their Mexican Riviera ports and because of the violence and warnings for some of the Mexican cities, they are doing an overnight in Cabo. I think the itineraries were looking something like Long Beach, Cabo, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Long Beach. There are concerns on a cruise board I follow that the itineraries will soon be Long Beach, Catalina Island, Cabo, Cabo, Long Beach.
