If you don't want to spend your precious time standing in line for museums and such, I HIGHLY recommend buying your tickets in advance.
Here's one site where you can buy individual tickets OR sign up for a guided tour in English, if you prefer:

Most cities in Italy have a similar service(s), so it's worth Googling "advance museum tickets" with the name of the city.
Also, most cities offer a combined ticket deal for their major attractions-- which cna be big money savers too.

Get a Roma pass. I was just in Rome with my Mom and it was fantastic to use. Also, I have a tip for touring the vatican if you are interested in skipping the lines (other than taking the huge group tourist trap tours). PM me if you are intersted.
