So I found out today that Boyfriend or Best Friend (who has de facto, though not totally, moved in and has been working from here) and I are at risk of getting our Comcast Internet shut off for over use. Boyfriend or Best Friend uses a lot of cloud computing. He backs up his three computers to Carbonite, uses Google Music, and streams XM high-def satelite radio day in and day out. Needless to say, apparently, in 16 days in February we have used 240 GBs of data. Comcast caps data use on residential service at 250 GBs per month. We still have 2 weeks in the month!!
I did some searching on this and found the plight of this guy: http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/07/are-we-going-to-be-bandwidth-hogs-or-cloud-computing-patrons-a-three-way-debate/ who had his internet shut off for A YEAR for going over the limit mostly for using cloud services.
So anyone who has comcast internet — go look up your data usage for the current month (https://customer.comcast.com/Secure/UsageMeterDetail.aspx)
Then answer the following:
1. How much data have you used so far this month?
2. Do you use any cloud servers (Amazon cloud, google music, carbonite, dropbox, etc.)
3. Do you stream anything (netflix, roku, amazon streaming, XM radio, hulu, etc.)
I really don’t know what to do at this point. Boyfriend or Best Friend is self employed and can get business class theoretically (if comcast lets us!!) but then I think we’ll have to give up our tv services cause you can’t have a mixed residential/business account.
ETA: Our access points are all secure, too, so I don’t think someone else is on the networks…
