We are eloping in October and had mixed responses.

My parents were actually great about it, which I didn’t expect given that I am the only child after my brother passed away a few years ago. That is the only thing that bothered me about it, but they assured me that they knew me well enough to see that a traditional wedding would be hellish for me.

FI’s parents were the killers on this. They’re divorced, and his dad was OVERJOYED… because that way he doesn’t have to pay for anything. His mother has just been very off about the whole thing, just hasn’t spoken to us about it and I don’t really care.

Others – friends and extended family – have been similarly varied. Those who know us well are happy, those who don’t are snotty and feel they’re being snubbed.

Do what suits you – those who are unhappy about it are usually the most inherently selfish, and they would usuall seek to serve themselves before thinking of others if the tables were turned.

@ontbride:

Both mothers were very upset. I am the only daughter in my family and my mother was every bit the controlling momzilla. I eloped to get away from her since talking didn’t do any good.
