I was off the pill for about 10 months before I met DH and I probably had 2-3 periods during that time. By the time I started the pill again, my cycles still hadn't fully regulated. The doctor told me that this is totally normally and it can take up to a year for things to stablize.
@msfahrenheit: Thanks! I know most of us fall into one of two camps: Back to normal or screwed up. I've just heard so many horror stories from the ladies who have been screwed up. It seems like many have to resort to taking meds to start ovulating again. I'm not sure if I should wait it out or try to speed things up.
Anyone else?
It can depend on which BC as well. Although I haven't been on BC consistently for over a decade, I was always taken a mini-Pill.
It is worth noting that I didn't have regular periods before going on BC, but my cycles have been even longer since going off BC.
Went off BC in September, had no withdrawal bleed, but got my first period in November. Then I didn't have another period, but got pregnant in March!! Miscarried in April, something was messed up, and I had to have surgery to remove a cyst and a tube. My first period after that was September, and then another in November. Now it has been 2 months and I haven't ovulated yet.
So it has been well over a year and my body is not regulating. I'm going to start meds very soon. Irregularity to this degree really sucks. In my case, I don't blame the pill - I just think is was masking the problems that have been there all along.
My first cycle off the pill it took me almost 70 days to get a period. I went to the doctor twice because I was so worried, but she said to wait it out and that my body was just out of wack. I got my period (man, it was awful---so heavy and long) at day 70 or so. My doc said that it could possibly take up to a year to conceive because I had been on the pill for so long and have endo, but I got pregnant on my second cycle!!!
So I got my period around day 70.... and then conceived about three weeks after that. Good luck!!!
@MissDareDevil: I hope that happens to me. I am still not technically late my first cycle off BCP but I am getting nervous! I just want to get a BFP so badly I have baby typhoid fever lol
@MissMusic: it honestly might take a while for your period to come. Mine was so late that when it came, it was like a gushing fountain!
Just relax and don't stress (I know it's hard to do) and let your body do it's thing. :) It will happen.
I was on the BCP for 10 years and when I went off it it took almost a year for my periods to come back. It was HORRIBLE. Doctors told me I would never get pregnant on my own and that I would need help, blah, blah, blah. I started to do acupuncture and chinese herbs and did it for about 2 years and I am now 8 weeks pregnant without even trying. We got very lucky. Now just praying for a sticky baby!
Everyone is different, some people find their period returns pretty quickly and for some people their cycles are wonky for a long time. If you have gone 3 months without a period, you should see your doctor. I have heard of people finding out they have PCOS after they go off the pill. Good luck!
When I went off of hormonal BC, my first cycle was over 200 days, I was told just to wait and see, my second cycle was over 100 days, during that time I had bloodwork and determined I had PCOS. I went on Metformin and had a normal cycle, on which I became pregnant. My total time from off of hormonal birth control to achieving pregnancy was 13 months.
@Ms Mini: thanks for sharing that is a great happy ending. I can deal with that if it happens to me, its just so hard to be patient!
Thanks everyone!
@MissDareDevil: Yay! I was hoping to hear a story like that.
@babymakes3: Sorry it's been so difficult for you. Hopefully the meds will make the difference.
@Danielle81: Stick baby stick!
I guess the only thing to do is wait it out. I think it's unlikely I have any other underlying issues (fingers crossed). I'm just reeeaaaalllly glad I went off the pill before we wanted to TTC, or this would be way worse. Thank God for the bee -- I never would have thought to do it otherwise.
DH and I aren't TTC yet, but we will probably start trying later this year. I had been on hormonal BC-- the pill and a truly hellacious year with implanon-- for 5 years and decided to give my body a nice long break so we could jump right into TTC when we were ready. My first cycle going off the pill was 52 days followed by a couple of crazy jumps from 26 to 54 to 38. Ugh. It took 7 months before I finally got back to my pre-BC cycles of 29-31 days.
A while ago, a friend went off the pill and discovered that it had been hiding PCOS, so in a fright I went off too just to test things out. I had been on for 10 years and my period came 29 days later and every month after! VERY lucky.
Anywho, for those that are concerned or TTC sooner, you could see a reputable doctor of chinese medicine or naturopathic doctor, or even a reputable herbalist. I'm a ND and it was a major part of my practice to regulate cycles to help fertility-challenged clients.
Anyone else in the same boat? Bumped an older thread for my own sanity.
First cycle off BCP and currently on CD 33 :( No signs of AF, no cramping, nothing. Almost no CM and only noticible thing is slight mood swings.
3 negative HPTS taken on CD 28/29/31. NOT currently TTC and using the POM.
Getting frustrated at where AF has gone, sadly, i want her to show up ASAP!!
Anyone else playing the waiting game? Have stories of encouragement after wonky first cycles off hormonal BCPs? Was on them for over 10 years....
It greatly depends on your own body chemistry. I went off the pill just because I didn't feel great on it and it took me 7 months to have a period again. I tracked my temperature the whole time and nothing was doing. Then everything just turned back on and it's been fine ever since.
I've read ( and based on my own experience I think this is true) that if your weight has changed at all while you were on the pill ( gaining or losing) that your body takes longer to sort itself out after you go off the pill.
Waiting sucks, but it will fix itself eventually! Doctors just don't like to advertise the fact that it takes some women awhile.
@ehirst: I wish doctors did tell you this!! LOL. My weight has always been very stable, but I guess it's just trying to figure out what is going on. I had some mild mild cramping this morning but gone now, still no AF. Trying not to think about it but generally just confused and anxious! Hopefully it doesn't take the 7 months like you experienced, i would have started going nuts!
I am hoping to avoid charting but i guess if it keeps up it might not be a bad idea. I just wish AF woudl show up and that the months that follow are a little more normal...
@StaceyA: My first cycle off BC was 35 days. I was getting really anxious cause I had NO symptoms leading up to it. I thought it was gonna take forever since I normally get sore boobs for about a week before. Then out of nowhere AF showed up. I was ridiculously excited! Try not to worry (easier said than done). Hoping she shows up soon for you!
@skipper2010: Thanks so much! That makes me feel a bit better knowing that you also didn't have any other symptoms.
I started charting after going off BC in January. First cycle was 33 days and showed a temperature increase (FF couldn't pinpoint ovulation, but it gave a range). I'm still on my second cycle though - CD 55. Not pregnant (tested a week or so ago), and we are not TTCing. We've got a trip in 4 weeks and I sure hope it comes before then, or waits until after.
I can't even remember my pre-BC days (it's been 7 years), but I'm pretty certain I was irregular. I've got a bad feeling I have PCOS.. one of my siblings has it too. This is one reason I started charting now, as I'd rather have charts to show to a doctor then to go in and them tell me to start charting and wait 6 months to a year.
@StaceyA: My two cents, for all they are worth: I really recommend you start tracking your temps for your own peace of mind. It's kind of a pain in the butt, but if you have crazy cycles coming off the pill it is totally worth it. My first cycle lasted a grand total of 121 days -- I would have gone NUTS (and gone through tons of tests)if I hadn't been tracking my temps and known that I hadn't ovulated.
@ehirst: Did you ever figure out why no period for so long? HA related? I did finally get mine, but it was Provera induced and now my body is back to doing nothing. At least I have some estrogen, but not enough to ovulate, apparently. Boo.
@bluegreenjean: Thank you! I might just start doing this. I bought the TCOYF book but haven't got to that part yet. I know you need a min hours of consecutive sleep before taking your temp... so for example if i woke up at 5am after a good night sleep, i would test then? If i went back to sleep at 5am and up again at 7am that would not be a good time to test, correct? Maybe it will help me figure things out. I just feel so uncertain as to what to do and what the heck my body is doing!!
Did your cycles return to normal after your first cycle of 121 days?! That is nuts!
@StaceyA: TCOYF rocks. You might want to think about charting for birth control, too. It's a lot more effective than POM -- (and -- ahm -- more fun for everyone!). I should probably double-check but I think the rule of thumb is at least 3 consectutive hours of sleep before temping. So if I wake up at 5 in the morning when I need to get up at 7, I temp then and go back to sleep. Otherwise, temp first thing (still in bed --don't get up or move around) when your alarm goes off or you wake up. A lot of people set an alarm so they can consistently temp at the same time, but for me it doesn't make a whole lot of difference, my temps stay pretty consistent regardless.
I hope my cycles will go back to normal. At this point I'd settle for ovulating no matter how out of whack my cycles are lengthwise! I'm not trying to get preggers yet, but I would sure like the option when I want to. CD 17 now, no ovulation. But, there seems to be some activity going on. Keeping my fingers crossed!
@bluegreenjean: Do you remember your temp (if you go back to sleep) or does the thermometer rememeber for you? Under the pillow is a great idea! I can just see me do a reading at like 6am and wake up again a few hours later and think "was that 97.6 or 96.7?" LOL!! Maybe a note pad and paper is ideal lol.
I started reading TCOYF and then took a break, guess i should get back on it to learn more about the charting and how it can help me figure this out. :)
@bluegreenjean: For me, I think it was just my weight. I was heavier in highschool and gradually through college lost weight, totalling about 20 pounds. So when I finally went off the pill after 6 years my body was different than what it was before i started taking the pill. Another thing I think makes a difference is whether or not you changed brands at all. My dose stayed constant, but because of insurance, I got forced from generic to generic quite a bit. Probably took 5 different types of pills in 6 years. And while the dose it the same, the formulations are different and I felt different on each brand.
I'd say at maybe 6 months I had one day of spotting which gave me hope that my uterus hadn't totally quit, and then a few weeks later finally got my period. I read TCOYF during this time to keep my sanity! I would definitely recommend it. I'm much more aware of signals my body is sending now and can tell when I ovulate just by those signals. I bought a thermometer, a diaphragm, and I'm never looking back. The pill is great, but for me it just wasn't working : )
@StaceyA Charting should be done everyday, but after many cycles, you can read the signs of your body pretty well so you don't have to religiously check temps every morning ( but you should just to be 100% sure!)
@StaceyA: If you have a digital thermometer it usually stores the last temp taken, you just need to turn it back on and there it is. It's probably best to get a basal body thermometer, though. I've never noticed a whole lot of difference from my regular (fever) thermometer -- so it might not be entirely necessary. But most of the basal ones light up (the good ones, anyway) which is great for reading your temp in the dark. I usually can remember it, but it gets stored, anyway in case I forget. The annoying thing is a lot of the basal ones beep. I have to put my thumb over it to not wake the husband. Happy temping! It is really awesome to know what your body is doing (and when to expect your period).
@ehirst: You are so patient! I can't imagine waiting seven months. Didn't your doctor try to get to take Provera? Losing weight on the pill seems a pretty common way to have messed up cycles when you go off. I think I lost some weight last summer (don't have a scale), which might have contributed to this. I've been eating like a fiend and putting more fat on just in case it will help. I can't say I haven't enjoyed that. I've never heard of changing brands causing issues. I was on five different pills over 10+ years (three of which were variations of the "same" pill, and yes the side effects were all very different). But, no more pill for me. Ever.
@bluegreenjean: I actually went to the doctors for a yearly physical and mentioned that my periods hadn't started, and they seemed very surprised at my situation. I also HATE going to the doctors. They wanted me to come back a different time for blood work/another appointment for the no period situation. And wouldn't you know, a week after that my period came! I think I scared my body back into working : )
I didn't have a natural period for 14 months (and gained 35 pounds) after I stopped BC pills. I had one Provera bleed 8 months in and another at 12 months when I had a referral to an endocrinologist who diagnosed me with PCOS and started me on 2000mg of Metformin. Two months later I had a period on my own! I'm starting BC again for the upcoming marriage, but I'm going to keep on with the Metformin so I'll be able to conceive when we are TTC eventually... probably not for another 3 or 4 years?
Still working on losing the weight, though. :/
EDIT: I did see 3 doctors before the endocrinologist diagnosed me-- tons of bloodwork, even an invasive ultrasound that ruled out cysts and had all my doctors saying everything was normal until my endo finally said "no, you aren't having your period, you gained weight, you have extra hair, your testosterone is elevated, it doesn't matter that you don't have cysts." Most regular doctors thought the labwork was normal but my endocrinologist knew the right ranges for testosterone to finally help me.
@bluegreenjean: Thank you! I read some more of TCOYF and wish I had read more last week. I was on vacation for 5 days and it talked about how travel can affect it .. duh! It was really interesting to read about temps and see some sample charts. Decided i would pick up a BBT thermometer today and start midcycle... and... wouldn't you know it. AF showed up this morning!!! So, last cycle was 34 days. I definitely feel lucky that it came so soon, given it was the first month off + had a few days of travel too. Hoping it settles down for the months to come.
Either way, i'm buying the thermometer today and starting. What better timing than on CD1 again!?
I am trying to refresh my memory, are you currently TTC or waiting?
Thank you for your wonderful advice, it is so nice to have people to talk to since none of my friends are currently going through this :(
@bookworm88: You sound like you had all the classic symptoms -- how could they have missed it? That's especially surprising because PCOS is often overdiagnosed. I've been reading up on it a lot because women who aren't ovulating often get a PCOS diagnosis, even if they lack the classic symptoms, and I'm 99% sure that can't possibly what is going on with me -- I think I fall somewhere on the HA / stress-induced anovulation spectrum.
@StaceyA: You're welcome! Congrats on the period -- I think congrats are in order; I would be pretty psyched, anyway. Nope not ttc yet. Thank God, or this would be driving me crazy.
@bluegreenjean: It was really frustrating because I'd already pretty much self-diagnosed from the help of the internet? It became a 5 month process in which I did a lot of my tests at our student health center at my graduate school and, while they are amazingly helpful with some things, it just wasn't a personal relationship like I have with my primary care provider back home. When I finally saw her, she was still confused because she didn't think my labwork reflected PCOS because she didn't think the testosterone was high enough, but she got me the ultrasound and referred me to an endo. The endo, who may be my favorite doctor I've ever seen, affirmed everything and has been so helpful getting my life back on track!
I was one ortho tri-cyclin lo for about a year and it took about a year for my periods to get back to normal. they've always been a little bit weird (I have a long cycle,) but in that year I only got maybe 3. we aren't ttc, so I can't answer for wether I was infertile during that time though.

when did they come back? Did they come back naturally, or did you need medication? Did you have trouble TTC?
I'm on CD 55 after going off the pill and nothing is happening! I've been temping every morning and they have stayed low, so I haven't ovulated. I had some cramps in the first few weeks, nothing since. From what I've read this could go on for months. I used to have regular 29 day cycles. Anyone else?
