Sorry I don't know a ton of details on this, but you should look into Google Adsense. They will put contextual ads (ads that are relevant to the subject matter) on your site. You make money when people click on it. I work in advertising, but we don't use this for our client so thats about all I know!
Thanks, kericita! Yeah, I've looked into AdSense, but for the future, I was wondering how getting bigger advertisers work. Thanks so much for your input though! :)
Disclaimer: I have no idea if this is true of all blogs, or if it varies by genre, etc.
I have a friend who writes a pretty popular political blog who has been told he needs 30,000 (thirty thousand) site hits A DAY before advertisers will even look at advertising on his blog.
As a side, he’s been mentioned on TV, linked to by the New Yorker – he’s not “small beans” in his sphere of the blogging world by any means, and he doesn’t get 30k hits a day.
His blog is basically (ok, it IS) the work of a full time job, without any pay.
My fashion blog gets about 170,000 visits a month, which is about 5,600 hits per day on average, and I have a ton of advertising on my site. And I had about half the traffic when I first signed up with the ad networks.
You can install AdSense even if you have zero traffic. As far as other ads, it depends on the ad networks you're working with. They all have different requirements. Your best bet is to apply to the ad networks. If they decline you for lack of traffic, you can reapply when your traffic increases.
Oh, I also get a lot of inquiries from individuals looking to advertise. I usually direct them to sign up on one ad network in particular. Sometimes, I'll just give them an arbitrary figure (either one-time or monthly) to put a banner ad on my site. Usually, I give them an outrageously high number, and once in a while they pay it. It's awesome!
Ah, thank you so much, guys! That helps a ton. I just really wanted to know what ballpark I should be in before I should start to consider advertising.
Thank you again! So helpful.

Okay, so I can't seem to find this answer anywhere, and I'm hoping some of you talented bees out there with bad ass blogs can lend a girl a hand.
I have a blog that eventually, of course, I'd like to make a little money off of. My question is, how many site visits should you have before contacting advertisers, and do advertisers approach you, or do you do all the approaching?
I'd appreciate any words of wisdom :)
