@GreenEyedMoon: It depends on what it is you want to do. Are you talking centerpieces, bouquets??? What is it you want to see?
@vmblai1019: Decorations, mostly. I'm doing a brooch bouquet for myself, and I think that's going to be fine. I already bought centerpieces from another bee! What I'm looking for now are things to spice up the venue, personal touches, non-invitation stationery, etc. I'm open to all sorts of neat things, though.
I thought this thread might be good for any other brides having more formal weddings, too, so really anything goes.
@vmblai1019: Actually, on second thought, I'd love to see some bouquets. I know what flowers I'm going to use for my maids, but I don't know what the handles will look like, and I'm wondering about the best ways to tie their floral bouquets to my brooch one. I haven't thought a whole lot about the flowergirls or boutonnieres, either, so I'd like to see ideas for those.
You can try searching in the DIY section, I'm always very inspired by all the posts and pictures in there
@bells: I've looked, and although there are some fabulous projects in there, I haven't seen much that I think would fit for my wedding. I was hoping that maybe some of the ladies could show me some different stuff that they've seen.
There have been many DIY's featured here on the Bee that do not lend themselves to the "rustic/vintage/county/carnival" type of wedding.
If you can't find inspiration here, there are lots of other wedding/social sites that feature DIY's on a regular basis:
Style Me Pretty- has a whole section DIY projects
Ruffled
Green Wedding Shoes
etc
I guess I should have said modern, too. Lots of the more formal projects I've seen - both here and on the other sites - are a modern sort of formal. I just haven't seen much for me, though there's the occasional odd project. I drool over a ton of things I've seen here, but they don't fit our wedding.
I'm looking for Victorian Era splendor. I was just hoping that maybe some of the ladies here have found some sort of gem that they'd be willing to share with me.
I think it would help if you shared your inspiration board so we had an idea of what you're looking for. I know for myself, it's kind of hard to visualize what you're imagining for your wedding, so it's hard to make suggestions.
@GreenEyedMoon: have you tried doing a search on google via images and then click the pictures that you like and see a how to guide or get a better idea of what you like. I do this all the time and has helped me find how to and instructions for a whole heaps of DIY's. Good luck with it all and you'll have to shar pictures...

@afbacher: Thank you! I love your place setting! It's giving me ideas...
I'm having a formal art deco wedding and I created Mr. and Mrs. chairsigns that I love. I'll have to post pics when I get home. Also we made our own cardbox which is not the typical birdcage or cake. We're also making an escort card display with feathers and plexiglass but haven't made it yet.
I'll post pictures when I get home.
@Meowkers: I'm very interested in seeing how your cardbox comes out! Thank you!
What I'm doing is looking at the most formal expensive beautiful images on google, then finding ways to recreate the look DIY style :D
Yeaaaah I have Dom Peringion tastes on a ummm water budget. Lol. I like things to look luxurious and beautiful. So look at all the beautiful expensive things then break them down into their pieces. Flowers, feathers, containers, etc. Then find the cheapest of each item. Ribbons in bulk, candles in bulk online, dollar store vases, etc. Get the look at a fraction of the cost.
@Meowkers: I'd really like to see a pic of your card box. This is the next item on my to do list and I'm needing a little inspiration.
@MrsGolden2Bee: I have the same problem. Champagne tastes but no money. Where do you go for said component parts?
@woodwindwaker: Thank you! We're having a masquerade wedding, so really, Phantom of the Opera sets the gold standard for style.
OK here are a few photos of our card box and chair signs. The cardbox was a large jewelry box I found at a discount store, painted gold and covered with mirror tiles. FI has created a mechanism for the top of the card box to lift slightly and lock into place so people can slip cards in but can't lift up the top. We might fit a large white flower in the opening at one corner.
The round things on the chair signs are little mirrors. (sorry that it's sideways. don't know how to rotate it)
@woodwindwaker: I'm pretty sure that will be the song that the wedding party walks into the reception to. :)
We had a formal wedding with lots of personal or DIY touches. My husband's brother is a heraldry buff and designed a family coat of arms for us which we used on all of our stationery. We made drink stirrers and "tears of joy" tissue packets, but we used more formal ribbon than the grosgrain I'd seen. For escort cards, we made buttons with each guest's name that had a green or blue trim based on brides/grooms side. My mom and I collected silver coffee and tea sets to fill with flowers and candles for centerpieces. My suggestions is to look for inspiration and then make it your own. I love all of the vintage and whimsical things that are popular now, but I also like that you can't quite place our wedding in time.
@vmblai1019: That first one is spectacular!
@Miss Scarlet: A personal coat of arms might just be the most awesome wedding idea I've heard from anyone. I need to investigate this further...
Hi GreenEyedMoon, I'm super relieved to find this thread; I was beginning to think I was the last person on earth who didn't want a rustic/whimsical wedding, but still on a budget! Can you share or direct me to what type of venue and decorations you are using?
My wedding was on the formal side, and I DIY'd:
Escort cardsTable NumbersSignage (guest book, photobooth, s'mores bar, Mr & Mrs. signs)ProgramsMenusFavors
If you have a good eye for design and can use software like Publisher or Illustrator the paper products are the easiest thing to DIY in my opinion. We purchased our favors (cookies) from a bakery but packaged them ourselves.

Most of the DIY stuff I've seen so far, though completely awesome and gorgeous and fabulous, lends itself to the rustic/vintage/county/carnival feel that's been popular in weddings recently, and so it doesn't work as well for my super formal Venetian masquerade wedding. What's some DIY stuff you've seen that could work at a more formal event? Send me some inspiration, ladies!
