I think people will take the trip for you and your wedding, but it would be an inconvenience.  Is there nothing closer where you would consider having your reception?

If it’s going to make your wedding “perfect” then it’s worth a little inconvenience.  My cousins wedding was terrific, and she had us walking a mile, in heels, in the rain.  Things like that don’t break a good time 🙂

Ours is about 30 minutes apart but our hotels are only 5 mins from the reception place. I think your fine:-)

Offer some refreshment right after the wedding – something simple, like lemonade and baked pretzels.  That way people can at least grab a snack for the road.

Is it possible to hold the reception in the ampitheatre? No harm in asking…

Do you have a wet weather plan?

To solve the cocktail hour photography delima, have you considered having a “first look”.  You could do your formals, then you could have your ceremony, then serve some light refreshments they can take for the road, and by the time everyone is back at the reception venue it’s time for the party to start.

Nevermind, just read what you wrote right above me.

I would suggest showing him some really great first look photos, and find some really great first look reviews on the internet and showing him actual stories and photos from actual people.  I’ve heard some really good points for a first look. Maybe you could win him over.

@futuremrswood25:  That’s an awesome wet weather plan.  I’m imagining the pictures of the entire congregation with umbrellas up, and your MOH and BM holding umbrellas over you, the groom, and the officiant.

I wouldn’t be bothered terribly by a 40 minute drive.  I say go for it!
