So I'm finishing up a group project and my group members aren't really doing anything. They contribute very few ideas and anything they do contribute... I feel is not really up to a standard of something I would be willing to turn in. I don't want to do the whole project myself, but thats kind of what it is looking like is going to happen. Has anyone else been in this situation and found something that worked to get their group members to contribute/give better ideas without being a bossy brat?

Oh man.  Trust me, I feel your pain.  I HATE group work.  Just tell them what to do, and if they refuse to help, go to your prof and complain.  Honestly, I'm just so over trying to seem "nice" when nobody else is willing to put forth any effort!  As you can see, this is a sore subject for me lol :)

No...I hate group projects too! I was always the one to do the work in college during our group projects, and it was so frustrating. My husband just finished up his masters, and he had the same issue. It doesn't matter what major you are, there are always slackers...and there's always someone who does all the work!

lol, i'm working on my group project now! i think sometimes it takes someone to be a bossy brat to get things done. i know i had that reputation of being a bit of a leader/hard ass in my undergraduate program but hey, we all got the work done and got great grades because of it. and i was always one of the first people snapped up when it came time to pick groups. someone has to be the heavy but you can be a nice heavy.

Group projects are totally the worst. I'm in a PhD program and we still have to do them too. I hate it. I'm so much better at working alone. Haha

UGH! YES. I tend to be the person that does everything in my group. I've only done one project in which my groupmates were just as perfectionist as me in my entire school life. Oh and we got to pick our partners on that one...so yea

EW. I hate group projects too! It seems like an across the board thing. Actually it is. It's called the social loafing effect. Google it. Anyway, I was in the same predicament last week for a WORSHIP service in seminary. It was terrible. Never have I been so relieved AFTER worshiping God.

I'm so over group projects.  Especially after taking "Group Dynamics" last term. (I just finished last week!I don't know what I was thinking taking that class when I don't like working in groups!!)  I think the easiest way to get people to do the work if they don't seem motivated is to take the leader role!  Be enthusiastic about it, and try to assign roles to everyone. Give everyone homework to do before your next meeting.  Personally, I've gotten to the point, where I don't care if I come across as bossy.  If no one is stepping up, I still want a good grade, and I don't want that to be sacrificed just because no one else is pulling their weight.

If things get really bad, you could always bring it up with your group.  explain your frustrations and how you don't feel like they are pulling their weight.  If things still don't change talk to your teacher. :/

i totally hear you! i just finished up a group project where 3-4 out of the 5 of us generally participated. the 5th hardly did anything, but was super opinionated when she did! she didn't show up to our meeting times that we scheduled, didn't email, but then came one time and said she was in the hospital for 3 days last week. we were like, well that would have been nice to know so we could have helped with your writing part. one time we had to meet with the prof to tell her our ideas for the project and this woman (she's in her 50's) gets up takes her laptop and tells us she's going to the bathroom and she never came back. when the prof came to talk with us she was like, oh you're only a group of 4? and we were like, no the 5th got up and went to the bathroom 15 min ago and never came back. it was so bizarre. i hate group projects too!

Ha, I posted something almost identical about a month ago. Honestly, there was no magical way to motivate anyone without being a b!tch :) But it worked, hehe.

don't go to your prof to complain about your group members.  it makes you sound like a whiny brat too.  we hate whiny students.  just do what you have to do to get it done, even if that means doing most of it yourself.

@amariem-- My problem with doing that is that sometimes with group projects an individual doesn't HAVE time to do it all themselves.  Why should you be punished because the rest of your group didn't step up?  Here you are trying to not only get a good grade, but you are trying to do a whole group's work by yourself.  It's ridiculously unfair.  Furthermore, IMHO, if a teacher doesn't want to deal with group drama, they shouldn't assign group projects.

I hate group projects.  They're even worse when they're in an online class!

I hate group projects!! I had one due tomorrow, and without consulting, a teammate negociated an extension with the teacher... an EXTENSION! which means 2 more days of working on this thing only because she couldn't manage her time properly... and I read her part.. not good!

But this semester is not about grades, it's about letting go and prioritizing. :)
