We had that issue renting from them too and I had no idea in advance! We went there all prepared to try on stuff. I did, however, get to see fabric swatches of the ties, vests and pocket squares. Also, Freeman Formals outfits Mr. Big and Tall, so the suits will fit your large groomsmen no problem.
@Jenniferk6: Did you end up renting from them? We may just go for it anyways, I like the idea they can do big and tall, and can tailor for the guys!
This is a problem with most tux stores. If you look through enough catalogs you realize Jim's Formal Wear has taken over the tux business. You can tell that its all Jim's because the models are the same. Every tux store we have been to gave us two chairs and a catalog. IF people tried to do this with brides they would get the catalog thrown at them I swear. My FI is 6'7 and skinny, he has problems with tuxes not being cut right. Last wedding he was a groomsman and he looked really bad because the whole tux was so loose on him because for some reaon if you are tall they increase height + width. Very frustrating.
Here are some stores I found that have in stock tux selections. It took a lot of research to find these but there are stores out there that will let you actually try on tuxes! Don't give up!

@JaneDomani: Thanks, except we are in Canada! So not really able to make the trip to try them on :(
But I *think* I have FI convinced to take the leap and order by measurement only. Scary, but they obviously do it all the time!
Or he and I will be taking a trip to Toronto to a store to try on and look at materials. Sigh.
@Take The Reins: I saw an advertisement for a tuxedo in a wedding magazine (it was NOT jim's formal wear) and I used that site to locate stores that carried tuxes in stock. I can't remember what the name of the designer was anymore. But keep your eye out when you are going through bridal magazine... most designers list store locations and if they are not associated with Jim's Formalwear they normally carry tuxes in stock. Also ask on your local board to see if anyone knows a place you can try on a tux. Good luck!!!

So, we stopped by TIo Top Tailors this weekend to check out the Freeman Formals as we have decided to go that route for our groomsmen. We want grey tuxes/suits due to the likely heat on our wedding day. So, to my GREAT surprise, I was informed you don't get to physically SEE the suit or try them on prior to ordering!! Not even fabric swatches! Does anyone else find that insane?? I mean I get they can't possibly stock every item in every store, but at least provide fabric swatches of colours and fabric!
I was shocked, and we are not unsure what to do as we have some large groomsmen to fit, and have no idea how the ones we liked in the catalogue will suit them! We wanted at least the groom to be able to see the shape and cut of the suit.
