I LOVE this kind of reception if there is enough food that I can eat. Keep in mind that if your wedding is on Friday, many people will be coming straight from work and will be tired and hugry. Make sure you have enough food to feed carnivores and vegetarians. I love a good Friday wedding. Good luck and have fun.
I don't think I'm going to have a sit down as well because the ceremony will not start until probably 7pm, to keep it late enough that people will have time to get dinner or something small but the invitation will say "Cocktail reception to follow."
It is not a hall, it is actually a historic home on a farm and the majority of the even will take place outside on a tent covered brick patio.
Anything bite size is great. I tend to really like little crustinies with a nice tapenade, cheese or other topping. They can be displayed really beautifully on a platter.
I hate when I get left holding stuff, for example with lamb popsicles, or those little spoons with amuse bouches. So unless your servers are going to be all over collecting these things, I recommend sticking with bitable pieces that only require a napkin.
Small puff pastries are also nice. Or those mini bagels with cream cheese, smoked salmon and capers if you want somethig more substantial.
I once went to a party and they were handing out little cones with poutine in it. It was delicious and a huge hit, but again, I did get stuck holding the gravy soaked cone for a while which was annoying.
I'm getting hungry...
I once went to a wedding where they served little bite sized stromboli's. They were delicious. Since they were all bread, cheese and meat, I think they constitute as "heavy" apps. Also, as MissKayEss pointed out, the guests won't be left with anything to hold!
I'm all about the minis; Mini pizza, mini tacos, mini burgers (sliders). They tend to be filling and cute.

Okay ladies I need some serious suggestions, I am having my wedding on September 28th which is a Friday night. I was thinking about doing heavy hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. So my question to you is what kind of hors d'oeuvres would you most enjoy and how much would I need to feed around 100 guests?
Thank you in advance!
