or better yet. Please email KATU news and ask for a follow up investigation.
This has happened a lot in the Philly/NJ area over the past couple of years with bridal shops. In fact, a whole popular venue closed and took people's money in Philly. I'm not even sure if it's resolved yet. Good luck to your friend. I hope she gets this resolved soon.
@RayRayFurious: Thanks! I hope she can get something back from this. I have heard warnings about buying online - but this was a large brick and mortar STORE, so I could have just as easily fallen for it.
I just want to warn girls to do their research. Even if it seems like a legit store - dig a bit deeper and look them up and customer comments and the Better Business Bureau complaints, etc.
This woman did this before and there are more out there across the US...This could happen to anyone!
She needs to file a complaint with the BBB. A police report with the department in that jurisdiction. Also, she needs to dispute the charges with her bank showing evidence that the business has closed, she has not received her dress, and whatever evidence she has they were a scam, including the BBB report and the police report. Hopefully the bank will refund her, though it could take many weeks.
@kitcat12: thanks for the advice! She paid with a check would the bank possibly refund her with a police report and such if the money is already long gone as the check was cashed so long ago?
Checks are just paper forms of debit cards. I dont see why it would be treated differently. It will depend on the bank. Her bank will still be able to see where the check was cashed. If it was a bank account, they should be able to work with that bank to get it figurred out. Doesnt hurt to try.... and nag. ;)
I thought that checks were harder/impossible to recoup (like cash) - I mean, without going through something like small claims court.
Credit cards have a system for disputing charges over a certain amount, and you can usually get your money back that way.
@atalante: that is what I thought! But I really have no idea since I have never went through this.
She is dilligently doing her research though and also tracked down the women's attorney :)
This happened a couple years ago in St. Louis too.
I hope your friend can get her money back.
It is so sad to me that this happens all over the US...these people are horrible!

Hi Bees...can you imagine finding your dream dress at a local botique...putting HALF down by check MONTHS ago...and then finding out on the NEWS that the dress shop closed? Then you get the runaround by the owner - told your dress was never ordered even though it was months ago - and told there was NOTHING they can do?
This happened to my friend this week. She was devestated. However, she took it upon her self to do research and found out it wasn't simple bankrupty. The business and owners are frauds. They have done this in other states (OR, ID and online) under other names to other brides. They need to be stopped - and they need to be stopped NOW.
We want the news to do a follow up story/investigation on this - because the story they did the other day made it seem hunky dory - case closed. But the brides are not being taken care of like the story stated a few days ago. They are actually getting NOTHING now.
I am not asking for you to comment and bash the owners or the botiques. Especially since you do not know them. I am not asking for that at all (even though we have done research and the facts of fruad and assumed names are all there) I am simply asking for you to comment on the KATU thread and ask that they DO A FOLLOW UP STORY ON THIS and talk to more brides that ARENT BEING HELPED. Here is the link. Please read the comments, as I mentioned the news story ends like everything is ok, but brides have commented otherwise...
