I can’t speak for England, but in Germany/Switzerland/France/Italy anything over 1 carat is considered huge. Anything bigger seems very flashy. A lot of women don’t even get an engagement ring, or if they do it’s often a simple band with a small diamond inlay or a small solitaire. Personally, I don’t know anyone with a ring bigger than 0.5 carats.

Traditionally, in Germany you get your wedding band for your engagement, wear it on your left hand and switch it over to your right hand when you get married.

When a friend of mine lived in Paris for two years, she never wore her 2 carat engagement ring, but only her wedding band because she felt very uncomfortable with people staring at it.

That being said, with the influence of the US through movies/TV/pop culture, classic ‘American’ engagement rings are getting increasingly popular, so I expect bigger erings in the future.

I hope this helps a bit 🙂

When I lived in Germany, I never saw more than a half carat diamond and rarely saw diamonds at all, most people wore plain gold bands. I have a 6X8mm aquamarine halo that got some stares on the tram.

@Future_Mrs_Dr_I:  Yes, unfortunately, engagement rings / diamonds are not common in Switzerland/Germany. I dont know anyone who has an engagement ring. But I dont know if it is a big thing when you will wear yours because people dont recognize. Here everyone can wear what he/she want. I dont think that you have to be afraid when you wear it in Germany. In which city are you moving? My sister lives in Bamberg – this is a U.S. Military Base.

Yes Schneewittli is right. I’m from Germany and Engagement Rings are not a big deal here. I got a 0.50 ct center Stone and this is kind of “big” here.

It depends on the country, some are gawkers but they can be anywhere.

ultimatly you have a gorgeous ring and it’s nothing more than a representwtion of love between u and Fi! That said, my mother grew up in Eastern Europe and whenever we go back she never removes her 1.5 rb.

I live in Switzerland and the married/engaged women at my husbands work all have a carat or more and some have it from Cartier. and my legacy has a centre stone of 1.8 .

but no one will care how big your ring is

Schneewittli @Sanibel13the Schweiz-Deutsch is killing me 😉 I live in Munich (DH is German) and there are plenty of diamonds bigger than mine. It is definitely true that the vast majority of women only wear a plain gold band, but no one here in Germany will look twice at an “American-sized” e-ring.

On another note, do we need a DACH-bees meetup?! 😉

Large e-rings aren’t terribly usual in Europe, but I can’t think of a single place they are taboo. You might get a stares from ring spotters (like me) but most people won’t even notice

By the way, I saw a woman with a 3ct (approx.) round brilliant on the tube today, I tried not to stare, but it was an eye-catcher.
