ARGH! I swear I'm going to scream if one more thing goes wrong in our wedding planning. I'm so sick of all of this.

Last night, FI and I drove 1.5 hours down to the town we're getting married in to file for our marriage license (it usually takes under an hour, but with rush hour traffic, ugh).

I had checked the town website to make sure we had everything we needed - proof of residency, photo ID... and all it said was "If you wish to obtain a marriage license you must be (18) years old and virtual your intentions in person with the Town Clerk. Business hours are Monday through Wednesday 8AM-4PM, Thursday 8AM to 7PM and Friday 8:00AM to 12:30PM."

FI doesn't get out of work til 5, and he works 45 min away, so he had to leave work an hour early yesterday so that we could get to the Town Hall by 7pm, since Thursdays are the only night they're open late.

We arrived at the town hall, paperwork in hand, at 6:30pm. When we walked in, I asked the woman who was at the front desk where we go to file for our marriage license. She said "this would be the place, but you have to come when the Town Clerk is here..." I responded that the website gave the hours of 8am - 7pm, and she informed us that "this is a small town" and the Town Clerk is only in from 8am - 12pm Monday through Friday, and that we should have called first... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

I double and triple checked the website, and NO WHERE on the site did it say those hours. I'm so irritated. FI doesn't accumulate paid time off where he works (he's new there) so he took an hour yesterday unpaid, and now we have to drive down during morning rush hour traffic at some point and hope that we can catch the Town Clerk (provided she's not on vacation, according to the woman we spoke with last night) between 8am and noon... more unpaid time off before our wedding?!

    I'm so frustrated.

That is very frustrating. That information would have been helpful on their website! Maybe you guys could take off a day of work to make it worth your while?

Since FI doesn't get paid time off, and I have to save my vacation time for the honeymoon, it will be difficult to take a day off... We're strapped for cash as it is... I am going to recommend they update that information on the website when I call down there today. Wouldn't want to drive down between 8am - 12 noon only to find that the clerk is on vacation!

Ah the joys of paperwork!  <-- sarcasm

Our priest is from Mexico and just visiting for two months, so he had to get a special letter stating he's able to perform marriages in Wisconsin.  I didn't realize there was such a rule until we applied for the marriage license.  Now they've been holding my license hostage until that letter comes in... good thing I started applying early!

Yeah, that was another annoying piece - the woman goes "when are you getting married?" and I responded "September" and she goes "well at least you have plenty of time to come back then..." in a voice that sounded like she was really pleased with herself. Grrr.

@7SEVENJ9: Are you allowed to apply for your license this early?  In Wisconsin, our licenses are only good for 30 days, so applying any earlier wouldn't have done us any good.

In MA, they're good for 60 days, so we wanted to get it over with so we could have one more thing checked off on our "to-do" list. We're at 57 days today!

In Colorado I think you can get your license anywhere in the state. Maybe you can get it closer to home? Then again you can consider yourself married in Colorado if you "hold yourself out in public as husband and wife." No paperwork required. I find that amusing.

I just emailed the Town Clerk and she said we can get the license anywhere in MA, but that the intention and license will forever live in the town wherever we file... since both of us out out of state, she recommends we file in Nahant... argh.

So annoying.  When we went to go get our marriage license, turns out we picked the one week day where the entire courthouse was closed.  It was election day.  It was such a pain to go there together and find out the whole place was closed!

I just emailed my FI and asked him if he cares where the intention and certificate are filed. I was born in MA but much closer to where we live now than where our wedding is... we could file in the town I was born in and then if I ever needed a copy of the marriage certificate or my birth certificate, it'd be at the same place!

I don't think it matters where you file!

I drove 30min to a small town because the license was $65 cheaper than it was in my big city LOL!

Also, on my small town website it said to call to make sure the clerk was in that day. And so the first day we were going to go, we called, and found out she was home sick. So we worked that day as normal and went another day.

So I suggest calling to confirm before you go!

I am having the same problem as you, but handling it differently. We live in CA, and wedding is in NJ, and they only allow 30 days notice. We won't have time/money/vacation days to take off to go do this, so we're getting courthouse married the week before we fly to NJ! I don't know how you feel about that, but we're thinking its just the paperwork and our day will still be our day, its the ceremony that matters.
