I like the idea of homemade macaroons (just got done making some for a friend), cookies, or I saw this idea that I loove. http://kenziekate.blogspot.com/2009/11/genius.html
That's so cute, I love the s'more idea! It makes me wish we were having an outdoor wedding.
Ours are probably going to be cookies... who doesn't like edible stuff?
Otherwise...we're having a tough time coming up with things, too.
We're doing recipe books for outdoor, farm/country wedding. Posted about it here...
http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/soooo-excited-about-my-idea-and-had-to-share
I like the favors where they put like the dry ingredients for soup or bread in a jar along with the recipe.
We are going to do escort card that are also bookmarks and some Italian wedding cookies.
The recipe book idea is so cute, I would love to get that at a wedding.
I was thinking about doing jars with a dry cookie mix and directions, just because I don't think I'll have time for actual milk and cookies. (I mean, I'm making our cakes!)
It seems like people definitely prefer edible favors - at FSIL's they were bakery cookies, and mine got stolen from my spot while I was dancing! They were all gone by 10 pm.
We are doing potted plants. We'll have them as centerpieces and then the guests get to take them home
We are using different galvanized metal buckets, watering cans, pails etc.
We will have a little tag on them that reads "grow old along with me...the best is yet to be"
almostduffy - I love the potted plant idea! I have only two bridesmaids (and one is only 7) so I wanted a DIY project they could help with. I decided to make wine glass charms to put on all the tables and in little bowls by the bar. We are having stations and mingling areas at the reception so charms might be a good idea. I ordered all the supplies for less than $20 and made 150 charms. It was fun! We turned up the music and had a "ladies night". The 7 year old loved picking out the bead combinations and I bent the edges with pliers. Simple enough! :)
I am making paper flowers to decorate the tables. And i am making crystals that are going to be added to my bouquet.!
We're planning on going with homemade fudge in a little cake shape but lately I've been wondering if we should go with my family's "famous" indulgent chocolate brownie recipe instead and cut them into tiny bite sized pieces....
We're doing chocolate chip cookies! I hadn't thought about doing milk too, but that's such a fun idea!
@amanda - are you making them? I would looove to do the cookies and milk with the cute little paper bags, I just know it'd be too much. I don't want to freeze them too far ahead of time, and that'd be so much to make!
@lilyfaith - I actually wanted to make them, but everyone said I was crazy, lol. As of now, our plan is to ask a family friend to bake them, or have the bakery we are getting our cake from do them. I still like the idea of doing them myself, but I got talked out of it!
FI and I are recording a duets CD- he has all teh equipment and he's playing all the instruments. I know people don't usually like getting mixed CD's for favors (..who does?) but this CD will have some songs that Fi wrote, both of us singing everything, and it'll be completely self-recorded. I think our family will especially like it.
Im researching of doing our own packet of playing cards, and creating the packaging for them, with out little logo, name and date with a thank you on the back.
So far I need 150 and I found them for 1.25 a pack. :S im trying to do a cheap favor, but seriously my cooking is that bad... that im not attempting a cooking DIY favor. I tried toffee apples, but they seriously did not look like toffee apples at the end!
@ccranetobe, I am doing a DIY favor as well. I'm going to michaels to buy a bunch of terra cotta pots, you can get the small ones for about .60 cents, and I'm going to buy a pack of flower seeds, stick it inside and tie with a lace ribbon. perfect for our spring wedding!!
I've seen the cutest idea! it was smaller chocolate chip cookies that were attached to a tall skinny glass of milk..they were called chocolate chip shooters! each guest got to keep the glass...they were etched with the date of the wedding!
We did the s'mores packets for our rehearsal bbq. I got addicted to making marshmallows and made them in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and blueberry. As an added bonus I found telescoping marshmallow roasting forks at Target a few weeks before marked down from $1 to $.50 each. I never got around to making cute tags like I had planned but they were still a huge hit:
my mom and i made cookies. everyone gets 2 chocolate pixies, and one sugar cookie in the shape of a wedding cake with pretty pink and white sprinkles. that's 300 cookies. it was a lot of work, but they ended up being really cute!
@grace - those look great! I actually love the look of the bags you ended up with.
@artbee - wow, that's a lot of work! how far in advance did you make them?
We're doing homemade brownies and wrapping the boxes in paper with cheesy TV show theme song lyrics printed on them!
@lilyfaith. we've been baking for a few months now and freezing them. last weekend we bagged and tied them with twine and my diy favor tag, so now they're all completed in the freezer and ready for the wedding that's in less than two weeks.
@artbee - Ahh! You're giving me hope for my milk and cookies favor idea after all. I wasn't sure how long it'd be okay to freeze in advance. I also am loving the sugar packet idea.
@lilyfaith. we make a whole bunch of cookies for thanksgiving brunch every year (i know, weird tradition, we've done it since before i was born) and we start baking months in advance and have a freezer full of cookies, the cookies always turn out great! i'd go with your idea. just realize that it's A LOT of baking, and be organized! count as your going, it will make things easier.
we're making 2 cookies (one for my fiance and one for me) for each person as well as a take home jar of jam! my fiance's step-mom normally makes cookies at any time to feed about 1000 people and she has a 5 ft. tall cabinet of jam that is completely filled, so we asked her if she would like to do this as a gift to us and she was so excited about it. i'm really pumped.

What are the best DIY favor ideas you've heard of or seen? I loved seeing all the responses to the non-traditional centerpieces, and I'd love to see your favor ideas!
I think hangover kits are really cute, and I love the milk and cookies thing:
