Do you think maybe you could go with a petsitter? We decided to get one last time we went away and it cost less to take care of both our cats instead of boarding just one.
Getting a second dog was a great choice! My girls are best friends and they keep each other busy. Of course when we board them it gets expensive but that is minimal. I have poodles so the hair cuts are more. You also need to think about the vet bills which also will be double.
But what you will get in regards to endless love, two babies are awesome!
We have trained our first dog on our own (fairly well, but he's not perfect) and I think we may take him to training to get his behavior in tip top shape before bringing another dog into mix. I've heard that the second dog (especially if its young) mimics the first dog.

FI and I would reeaallyy like to get a second dog, but we're not sure if its the best idea. 90% of the year it would be fine, minus the one week a year we would go home for Christmas and have to board them. We could afford it but the boarding costs for 2 dogs for a week is high!
What do you think bee's? How did you make the decision to get a second dog?
